How to achieve this
Hi everyone,
I would like to paint my kit replicating the matt-ish effect like those on some 1:1 supercars. The attached are what I want to achieve. Could anyone please guide me on what kind paints to basecoat to clear - all that are relevant to achieving the said result - to use. Much appreciated. |

Matte clear over whatever else color you put down.

or if you use tamiya water-based acrylics, you can mix a very small amount of flat base (X-21) to the paint you're using. modify until you get the flat finish you want.
not sure if this'll work too with gunze/mr color and academy paints, but i assume this might.

My favorite is the Gunze Mr Semi Gloss Clear or whatever they call it. Really nice texture, not dead flat but close, and doesn't pick up oils like Testors.

Re: How to achieve this
Thanks guys for your input. Can I confirm that semi-gloss is the way to achieve the matt-ish finish? So then, do I use gloss paint and then semi-gloss clear over it OR flat paint and then semi-gloss over it?
Do I polish it as the final step? I suppose this defeats the purpose of the matt-ish finish? |

Re: How to achieve this
either way will work, since your top layer will still be semi-gloss clear. no need to polish it as you might defeat the purpose of the semi-gloss layer.

Re: How to achieve this
Semi Gloss Clear is actually closer to Matte vinyls for wrapping cars than Tamiya Matte clear is, so i reckon Semi Gloss Clear
