Trans ?

Hi all, just picked up a 90 300zx n/a. This is my first z car so it may be normal. On startup and putting it in drive(auto trans btw) there is about a 2 second hesitation before it kicks in gear. Also shifting seems a bit weird, watching the tach for shift points it wants to hit 4k rpm no matter how much pedal before it shifts. Any thoughts? Its raining its ass off here atm but the first chance I get all fluids will be replaced, I did check the trans fluid, may be a touch low but not enough to cause this behavior I think, dunno.
Thanks in advance, ohh, it has 190k miles very decent shape, no dents a few small dings, some service records that I havnt looked at yet. Drove it for an hour on the ride home and it runs and drives like a hotrod, all this for 1200 .

Bad pic, Ill try and get better ones when it quits friggin raining.

Low fluid might cause that, a lack of pressure can lead to slow, sloppy shifting. Try topping it off and go from there. Simple things first.

Re: Trans ?

i would change the transmission fluid, that is most likely the problem. it looks pretty good by the pic.

Trans

I had similiar promblems with my 1984 300zx and pulled the bottom pan off and changed the trans filter which helped about a week. If you pull the bottom pan and you find lots of sludge and small metal flakes or like a real thick film - Hate to be the bearer of bad news but looking at a complete rebuild - Just got mine back last week and cost me $1327 for whole new rebuild but came back like factory new - Just got the 500 miles on it today and seeing more preformance. Good luck

drop the pan and change the fluid. trans fluid is supposed to be changed once a year. it will turn into sludge...

there is a magnet in the bottom of the pan. if this covered, and i mean covered in shavings...dont expect to get too much more life out of that trans.

also...it could be the solenoid packs.

Re: Trans ?

^I'm sure he'd rather pay the 60(?) bucks to change his trans fluid if that's all that the problem is... not very economical, are we freak...

Re: Trans ?

well, we all know that 5 speeds are a lot better for the Z's purpose than automatics, and they are funner.

Re: Trans ?

thats another thing, 5 speeds are also a lot easier and cheaper to work on. all you really have to replace is the clutch and the synchros.

Re: Trans ?

I had looked at changing to 5 speed but wanted to keep it stock - Next problem that arises I will have to agree and go 5 Speed if I can find one.

Re: Trans ?

well if you want to do it eventually, a 5 spd would be a good upgrade, because they are alot stronger than the autp tranny... espcially the 87-89 turbo trannys
