95 noise in front end

There is a loud squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel. I have checked the power steering fluid, the level is fine. When I go over speed bumps a similar squeak is heard, like a spring. I'm not sure if any of these things are related. One mechanic told me the ball joints needed to be replaced. Another one told me the Power Steering Pump needs to be changed. I am a female and I'm afraid they are taking me for a ride. Any info or advice is appreciated.

Both mechanics can be right. Hard to say which one is the main reason without hearing the noise. I had the same and the reason was PS Pump (it was also leaking and loosing fluid). Do you hear the noise when idling and you are turning the wheel? If yes, it's probably the pump. Maybe you need to have third mechanic's opinion!

Yes, I hear the noise when idling and turning the wheel. There is no PS fluid on the ground and the level is good.

The Winnies are notorius for raising a ruckus when the tie-rod ends go dry of lube. Some folks have suggested injecting lube into the boots of tie rod ends and ball joints ... using an attachment needle, for a grease gun, that can be bought in many parts stores.

I have used the grease needle as 12Ounce suggested. Don't overdo it..... The grease comes out a lot faster than one would think.
I did the inner and outer tie rod ends, and the lower ball joints. I just poked the needle into the side of the seal...makes a very small hole.

If these things are dry, and making a noise.....It is a safe bet that it is putting an increased load on your power steering.

How can you tell if the power steering pump needs to be replaced? Just from the noise and a normal PSF level?

If it is not leaking......I remember reading 2 posts that people did to take care of a noisy power steering pump.

1. Grease needle to add grease to the tie rod ends and lower ball joints.

2. Change power steering fluid. Make sure to use the correct fluid.....The '95, I believe, calls for a "Type F" fluid. I found that the Redline Power Steering fluid listed the Ford specification NUMBER that my owner's manual called for. Will be more tolerant of the high heat that the Ford power steering fluid seems to be exposed to.
I had to buy mine form a racing supply store.
I did NOT find the correct fluid at the auto parts stores in my area.
