2000 Pontiac Grand Prix service engine soon light

Today I was driving my car from work, and after filling the tank, I was heading home and went over a railroad track and the service engine soon came on. Idk if it was the bump or what but its really getting on my nerves. Can you give me tips on what it may be? Thank you, Josh

Wait for a couple of days and wait to see if the light goes off. If it does, there is probably nothing to worry about. If you're anxious, find somewhere like autozone to hook up a code reader to figure out why it is on. It could be a lot of things but probably not much at all if the car is running good. If an O2 sensor was loose the bump could have jarred it loose and possibly cause it, but there is no definite answer as to what caused it without hooking it up to find the code.

if the car is running just fine, then its safe to say you just didnt click the gas cap 3 times when you put it on. you will have to have the SES light reset.

whenever you put gas in your car, you have to make sure the cap clicks 3 times to ensure the SES light will not come on.

I had a similar problem with the SES light. Waited a few days, but the light didn't go out. Bought a new gas cap (the old one didn't "click"), but the problem turned out to be the post-catalytic converter O2 sensor. Having the codes scanned is usually free at Autozone and can give you some peace of mind.

Always a good bet to have it scanned either way, having an SES light is never something your gonna want. I personally bought an OBD II scanner for about 130$ when they were on sale and it's saved me about 7x that now compared to dealership prices. Also you have DTC's that don't showup on LED's aswell: like an egr valve stuck closed.

I had a similar incident. In my case I went to Advance Auto Parts and had them reset it, and it didn't return.
