Foam Guns (Not Cannons) truly worth it? I have one, but might return it

I purchased a decent foam gun from Avatar foam connon and instantly I noticed two things.
1- I used way too much soap.. I did have it at the highest foam setting (the gun only had soap in the attaching jar. maybe add water as well?)
2- The results were nothing spectacular. While yes, the car was covered in foam........ A really well soapy mitt would achieve the same results.
So are foam guns worth it? Should I just return the gun? I see products from avatar that say it's OK to use they shampoo's in a gun, but then I see HOW much soap this gun uses, and suddenly their $20 bottle doesn't seem like a value. And someone told me, the more foam the better.
Thoughts?
