2000 Accord Misfire

I am posting this for a friend of mine. He has a 2000 Honda Accord V6 with 70000 miles. The problem he is having is that at low rpm's, it is misfiring occasionally. I ran an OBD II diagnostics scanner on it and it showed the code "Random Misfire". Does anyone know what would cause that to happen? It has new plugs and he checked the coil packs, but is anyone else having the same problem or did anyone ever have this problem. The code doesn't always show up on the scanner, but if you check in the pending codes, it appears. Thanks for the help!

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

Nobody has heard of this problem? Anyone have any suggestions on what we should check on the car?

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

Misfires could come from the distributor cap, igniter, ECU or crank angle sensor in the distributor.

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

All the wires are connected correctly. This misfire only happens at low rpms, usually when he decellerates. He said when the car goes 2 mph that the engine sometimes chugs and sputters. I have checked and double checked everything w/ this guys father who is my Autos Instructor so he knows what he's doing. But we'll recheck your suggestions, but keep them coming! Thanks for the help.

Does that Accord has stock air intake? I used to have that problem on my 2000 Accord, but as soon as I put back the stock air box and drove it for a day or two, the engine went from rough skipping rpm to smooth and quiet.

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

My 2000 HOnda accord v6 also has multiple cylinder misfires. I've had the valves adjusted, a tune up & it still misfires. Go figure. I'm in the same boat!!

Make sure there is no oil in the spark plug housing.(where you put the spark plug wires) A lot of times the seals go bad and a little iol may get in there. It happened to me. I changed my valve cover and I forgot to change the spark plug wire gaskets. A little oil was getting into the housing and my car was sputtering like crazy. So I removed the valve cover, plug wires and used a rag to clear out that area. Then replaced the spark plug wire gaskets and everything else and so far it's perfectly fine.

Angry Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

I have been having the same problem; I just took my car to a shop today & my cam shaft was bad, the valves needed adjusting again. I just recently replaced the egr port valve. I just had the timing belt replaced. Good Luck!

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

if misfire's only occurs during lower rpm/idle....i would check the fuel pressure after varifying that the ignition system is ok.

Re: 2000 Accord Misfire

It is common for the EGR valve to go bad. That can cause rough running and misfire. The EGR valve is pretty easy to replace. A secondary effect is that the port from the intake manifold can become carboned up to the point it is blocked. (They actually make a kit for this problem consisting of a stainless steel tube to be inserted into the port. That will avoid the problem in the future, but the port has to be drilled out a little.) If a new EGR valve doesn't fix it, removing the intake manifold and cleaning out the port might be in order.
