oil around spark plug boot???

I recently did a spark plug change all the plugs were fine but the plug nearest the oil fill cap had oil down in the spark plug hole. It was about half filled with oil, I removed the boot, sucked out the oil and replaced the spark plug and re-assembled. Runs great what gives on the oil gathering in that area?? Any ideas let me know. Thanks.

it's "normal". there are seals between the valve cover and the spark plug tubes (which run down through to the top of the head). they leak. and then short out the spark plug.

what year is your trooper?

on early genII troopers (1992 - ) isuzu came up with a mickeymouse fix to avoid paying for removing all those valve covers and replacing all those seals -- namely a special set of ignition (spark plug) wires with fat connectors with ribs that seal the oil that does get in the tube , to seal that oil from shorting out the plugs. you can buy them from isuzu, and i've seen a post that they may be available from other sources. btw, if you do install them, from a known isuzu expert JLEMOND coat the OUTSIDE of the connectors with antiseize and the INSIDE with dielectric grease. otherwise they are all but impossible to remove when you need to.

these connectors work, but if its real bad you need to think about removing the vc and replacing those seals and use the new fat connectors also.

Re: oil around spark plug boot???

My trooper is a 1998 with the 3.5 v6. Boy that sucks that I have to remove the valve cover to fix just one. Oh well could be worse I guess. Who can I get these seals from, we have no local Isuzu dealers, or should I just search the net? Thanks.

you can call Merlin at a dealer in missouri, free ship, 'internet discount', good parts guy wait on hold for him
http://isuzu.stcharlesauto.com/Department-Parts.aspx

or go to another forum
http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/index.php

and PM JLEMOND a genuine isuzu expert guru who was an isuzu tech trainer and very knowlegeable and sells genuine isuzu parts for less.

also UNDERDOG at the same forum, PM him, he's a parts guy at a dealership in oregon. also free shipping, some incredible discounts.

of course get the vc gasket (s) and any other gaskets/seals you will need, depending on what you end up removing

Thumbs up Re: oil around spark plug boot???

Wow. I never realized they had a quick fix for this! When I first got my 1996 Rodeo, I pulled the valve covers and replaced the valve cover gaskets, but I did not replace the gaskets at the spark plugs. I did not know about the spark plug area oil leaking problem or I would have fixed it then; it was a difficult job for me changing the valve cover gaskets, a chore that would have been very easy for other makes of vehicles. I even had to pull off the intake. I will definitely look for the special plug wires!

Re: oil around spark plug boot???

Give St Charles Isuzu a shot for the parts, they are great to deal with.

Re: oil around spark plug boot???

Replacing the plug wires? My Rodeo has 6 coil packs, not plug wires per se.
Big time oil leaking on threads of spark plugs #1 and #6
