Correct Procedure to R&R transmission on 1996 Tahoe 4x4 5.7L

Hello all!,
Ok, I have a 1996 Tahoe 4x4 that i drove from Indiana to California towing a small trailer with pretty much everything i own in it (I know ).
So everything went fine during the trip, but a week ago i lost third gear. Now i am faced with what i can only guess will be a fun filled couple of days (yes, i am being sarcastic).
I purchased a used Trans, and new universal joints (they were getting pretty worn). Now i am going to do the swap but i can't afford a FSM, so can anyone tell me if the Chilton, or other inexpensive repair manual will tell me everything i should know to do it correctly?
My G/F drives it offen, and i would hate to have it break down on her. Any help with my concerns would be greatly appreciated.
