Question Replaceing Rocker Panles

I have a 1970 nova. Its needes two new rocker panels. I have both rockers but i just need some advice on how do install them. like should i cut out the old ones so the new ones fit flush in there or should i cut the old ones out leaving a little overlap to weld the new ones on to?

Thanks DAN

Re: Replaceing Rocker Panles

You need to leave a little for the overlap.

Most shops will tell you to take time to fit them perfectly. YOu have to cut the old ones out and take time to fit the new ones. Butt welding the material with no overlap is best. If you weld to a overlap you will have rust later on and you will not know it. I have had to cut out two floorpans another shop welded in and refit and reweld them due to the overlap had rust in between the gaps.
You start by tacking in the rocker and do not tack in the same area due to heat and warping issues. tack on area and then another area. I weld in whole panel. takes awhile then you might have to hammer dolly a bit. once you get it somewhat straight, mist alittle bit of black paint and block sand the area then you can tell your high low spots.
