Why are the Supras so damn fast? Rumour has it - confirmed by a friend who was lucky enough to peek under a Supra's bonnet - that they are running on MR 2's 4 cylinder 2 litre turbo engine churning 400+ horses! That's why!

Yeah?!? My jaw totally dropped when I read that the Supra were running on with I4s. I was looking though all the team pages on www.jgtc.net go there now! and I was looking to confirm the the Skylines run with RWD oonly, when I came accross that! WOW! Now I really want an MR2!

rumor has it that the MR-2 has very good handling over other cars.
Sucks how the new MR-S has no turbo but it's extremely light |

Yeah...the superfast Supras in the JGTCC use the MR2's 4 cyl engine with turbo. In fact, the famous 200mph Top Secret Supra uses the same engine too. It's lighter then the normal Supra engine and occupies less space. Mounted deep into the bonnet, the engine almost sits on the driver's lap under the dash! This leaves a lot of space in the bonnet for huge fans for cooling purposes and contribute to better weight distribution.

Yes, the MR2 is mid engined. That contributes to its excellent weight distribution. But in the Supra, the MR2 engine is front mounted deep into the bonnet so much so part of the engine is actually under the dash! That is as close as possible to the Supra having a mid engine I suppose. Apparently it help s a lot in achieving good weight distribution. That also leaves a lot of space in front of the bonnet for cooling purposes. The Top Secret 200mph Supra for example exploits this empty area to put an industrial sized cooling fan! You should see the pic, the fans are huge and is mounted horizontally!

MR-S and MR-2

interesting to note also that the MR-2 ran at a weight of 955 kg but the MR-S (you'd think would be lighter) runs at a weight of 980 kg... |

the car at the top of the thread is the Marcos LM600, from england. it was designed for FIA GT racing and uses a 6.0 litre chevy motor. the car is a 6 year old (or so) design and has done moderately well in europe, where it is still used in the FIA GT series. Marcos did build a street version of this car as well to make it legal, but the company went into bankrupcy last year (2001), although there was talk of a dutch consortium buying the company and moving production to the netherlands. the company's website still works, a google search chould turn it up, it's worth a look at.
the 4 cylinder in the supra isn't exactly the engine used in the MR2. it is closely related, yes, but is closer in relation to the WRC motor from the Corolla and the GTP prototype motor from the early 90's, actual power is something over 600hp. at least this is based on everything i've been able to learn about the JGTC supra...
