2000 Grand am se...bad idle and stalls
I have a 2000 Grand am se with a 2.4l engine. I have a few different symptoms to the problem and dont know a whole lot about cars.
When I first start the car it idles high for about a minute at about 1400 rpm then drops to the normal idle range around 700 - 800 rpm. Then it drives fine at until the rpms are around 1400 - 1700. When I have to slow down and the get around that range and then I try to speed up again its like the car hesitates before it accelerates. Sometimes but not all the time when at a stop light the car idles rough and shakes at around 500 - 600 rpm. Like its going to die but trying not to. And the last symptom is sometimes it stalls. It seems to do it when I am slowing down to make a turn. So far it as started right back up. Thanks for any help you can give. |

Re: 2000 Grand am se...bad idle and stalls
Sounds like your typical grand am.
It could either be your injectors are clogged/dirty or the Idle air control valve IAC passage is clogged. And its possible you need plugs & or other ignition components are faulting. The IAC passage is notorious for getting clogged and causing rough idle and stalling. Here is a link to the Tips and Maintenance Sub Forum, it has the procedures to clean & test the IAC a long with other helpful things. Hope that helps

Re: 2000 Grand am se...bad idle and stalls
I have a 2002 Grand Am that was idling high, 2000-2500 and it was determined that the throttle position sensor was bad. I guess this can cause a high or low idle depending on which part of the sensor goes bad.

next time it stalls smack the gas tank from underneat with a hammer couple times. if car fires up - your fuel pump module is going. Common GA problem
