Check engine light and gas cap
Auto Zone checked for engine light and said I needed new gas cap. Have driven for over 75 miles and with at least a dozen start-stops with new cap and light is still on. I have a Tacoma 2002. What do I do next? Thanks for any help.

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
Did they clear the code once you got a new cap?

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
You can't always fix the problem and expect the light to just go away. You may have to reset the engine computer. Sometimes it's as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, sometimes there's more to it. I'm sure the procedure specific to your truck isn't that hard to find.

Pull the ECM fuse for a couple of seconds. It's in the engine compartment by the battery.

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
I got the light to go off by disconnecting the battery and it stayed off for short while and is now back on again. Should I take it back to Auto Zone again or does anyone know what the trouble might be? Thanks to everybody for your help, Bob

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
You need to have the code read to figure out what is tripping the light. My guess is you probably have an evap problem.

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
Checked again and very sure have a leak in vacuum. Is there anywhere I can get a diagram showing the path of the vacuum hose line? Looking at the engine compartment I can not tell where the line starts at the intake manifold. A picture or diagram would be very helpful. Many thanks, Bob

Re: Check engine light and gas cap
The gas cap is only the first thing to try for EGR codes. Its a quick fix and inexpensive if that happens to be the cause. My Taco did the same thing and it ended up being the EGR valve. Its a $35 part from Toyota. Its located on the driver side of the intake and you can replace it in about 15 minutes with a 10MM wrench.
