71 Cyclone GT
Hi Everyone
I have a 1971 Mercury Cyclone GT that In have been working on the last couple of years. It has a 351C motor (4bbl), TCI Super Streetfighter transmission, 4:11 gears, tru-lok rearend.... Can anyone suggest a good cam replacement...I don't want to go overboard, but I definately want the "choppy" sound. I'm also adding headers, and would appreciate recommendations for them also. Thanks Last edited by MadMuscle; 05-07-2008 at 06:56 PM. |

Re: 71 Cyclone GT
Best way here is to contact one of the major cam companys, Crane, Comp Cams, their tech guys, based on your combo, can set you up with the appropriate cam.

Re: 71 Cyclone GT
It just depends on whether this is an everyday driver that requires some kind of mileage or weekend show boat. They will need to know this and also every modification that may have already been made to this engine.
Cleveland engine is a nice engine. I had a 400C. |

Re: 71 Cyclone GT
Once work started on the engine there was more to do than I thought, wanted it done right...so started from scratch.
Took everything apart and sent the block & heads to the local machine shop to be checked out. Everything dipped and checked for cracks...All OK Bored block to .030, replaced all bearings, gaskets, oil pump, crankshaft pistons, rings, ....pretty much everything, like a new engine. I had already had some work done...new cam, I love the sound...not so lopey it wants to die, but enough that it has that "don't mess with me" sound. New ceramic coated headers, Weiand intake, Edelbrock 4 bbl carb, Ford Racing valve covers, Edelbrock air cleaner, ignition....etc...at this point (still in shop) almost everything on or in the engine has been replaced with a higher performance part. |

Re: 71 Cyclone GT
Hello not to be rude but their was no such thing as a 400 Cleveland engine. You are absolutely right about the Cleveland being a nice engine but the Cleveland engines only came in 351 cubic inches. The 400 cubic inch engine which in appearance looked like a Cleveland inch was actually a 400 Modified engine. The 351 cubic inch actually came in 3 different variations: 351 Windsor, 351 Cleveland and 351 Modified. Just thought I would update you with the facts as this may also help for future reference. Have a great day!
