Rotary Rebuilding

Hey, I know that some of the questions I ask might seem stupid, but as I am 18y.o and don't know a lot about Rotary motors, I need to ask them, so if you all would bare with me that would be awesome.

So I have 3 13b motors. None of them work, and was wondering about rebuilding them? Does anyone have any good tip hints suggestions? Places to get rebuild kits? Costs?

I've read the Mitchel and Haynes manual on my car, and it's got a whopping like half page section on what to do? So that's why I am wondering.

If it's not feesable to attempt a rebuild, is there anyone out there who buy's blown 13b's?

Can anyone inform me on the differences between 13b, 12a, Renisis, and 20b's?

Also, what's with all the abriviations? what do they mean?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Morgan

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

Rebuilding them is not an easy task if you have never attempted it before. There are varisou videos and such on the market that may assist you in your attempt.

12a, 13b, 20b, ect ect.
Well the numbers basicly represnet the displacement,
eg. 12a 1200cc, 13b 1300cc, ect ect

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

Okay, so the number before the letter lets me know the displacement, and the number means?

Well this is my recollection (sp?) of each one. I don't own a 7, (Hope to soon tho since my dad has an 8. 12A is the engine code for some earlier RX-7 i believe only one i am unsure about. The 13b is the engine used in more recent RX-7's. It is the base for the 3rd gen which is turbo charged which is known as the 13B-REW Which displace 1.3 L. The 20B was a 3-Rotor Engine which was originally used in the Cosmo (I believe.) Many people transplant this into the 3rd Gen RX-7 fro power obviously. Called the 20B because it displaces 2.0 L. The Renisis is Mazda's Refined Rotary currently in RX-8's. It has 2 Rotors displacing 1.3L putting out 235 or 250 depending which one you have. The main difference between the 13B and the Renisis is that the Ports are on the housing wall rather than the end plates allowing for more exhaust gases to exit easier providing a more emissions efficient Engine. I believe i got most of it. If I messed anything up, please correct me.

that is true, but saying that to someone and then saying the number indicates displacement just screws everythign up :P

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

All these FC FB and other things like that still confuse the hell out of me.

But for the most part I think I finally understand the 12 13 20 part of it.

The letters still are a little confusing but I'll get it sooner or later.

Awesome, thanks for all the information. Much appreciated.

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

That would make sense as to why some First Gens I've seen have 12A's and 12ATs?

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

ok The Letters are the level of Development the engine Is In. The 12a Is a 1.1 liter engine which is 1198cc. the 13b is a 1.2 Liter Which is 1298cc. There are Several versions of The 13b. There's the 4 Port 13b which was In The RX2- RX5 the 6 port 13b which was in The 1st gen RX7 GSL-SE to the 3rd gen RX7 The 13B that was In the 3RD Gen is The renew 13B. The Renesis 13B is In the RX8 i got this Info from Mazdas own History website. A rebuild Is Not that Hard to do as long as You get the right Videos and Follow Them To T! Dot your I's and Cross your T's more then Once! Make sure Its All Right.

Re: Rotary Rebuilding

Although rebuilding a rotary might seem like a daunting task at first once you start to get into the research about it, it slowly starts to make more sense. I would not recommend trying to rebuild a motor by “winging it” just because you’re going to cause frustration on yourself later. In the end though you’re better off sending it to a shop so you can get new upgrades to make the motor last longer and have more power, examples Custom engine paint, Corner seal spring upgrade, Rotor Housing Cooling Modification, Polished rotors, Super Apex Seals, Engine Balancing, Rear Modified Stationary Gear, Modified Front Stationary Gear 13B, Race Clearance of Rotors, Mazda Factory Race Rotor Bearings, 3mm apex seal upgrade, ENG STUD KIT 13B Standard, and Engine Porting.
