New guy to Jaguar Forum

Hey, Im new to the Jaguar posts. I own a 99 Red xk8 convertable. Have had it for about 1 1/2 years. Got 62k miles on it.

I have a question about the timing chain/gears(tensioners). I have read that the 99 will go after awhile. Is there any way to tell if the tensioners have been changed without pulling the whole thing apart?

From all I have read, if your unable to verify the replacement of the tensioners from service records, if available, the engine has to be opened for a visual inspection. Most of the time before failing, but not always, the tensioners will rattle when starting up cold. My suggestion, to avoid the sleepless nights thinking about a $12,000 replacement engine if the tensioners fail and tear it up, is to have them replaced which is approx $1,500. Not dirt cheap but much less than the alternative.

Regards.
