Dremels?

So, I keep seeing these ebay auctions for Dremel tool holders to go onto a QCTP.

example:

Ignorance alert: How/why would you put a Dremel tool onto a lathe?

Re: Dremels?

Never seen one before. I guess it could be used for cross-drilling (like I'm gong to be doing a lot of with the mill and rotary table) It could be used for grinding keyways/notches etc. but I wouldn't think the tolerances would be too clever?

Re: Dremels?

Grinding attachments for lathes have many uses, one is being able to create extremely sharp points that would be difficult to achieve using a normal tool. A carb needle made out of music wire for an engine, for example.

Also to do some convex shapes without a special tool. Ex. light proyector.

Re: Dremels?

Polishing and grinding would be a great use.

Re: Dremels?

Another common use is to make a ground finish on an item that you have turned thus giving it a smoother or more percision finish. Typically the item in the chuck is rotated as well as the bit in the grinding tool but in opposite directions.

Best regards,

Larry
