Fantastic stuff SB! I really love the look of the parts in raw fibreglass, it's a shame they'll get painted really!
Happy New Year to you too! Keef |

Re: 1/8 Porsche 908/03
Happy New Year to you all!
So, having decided that I wouldn't go overboard with detailing the underside of the engine - no-one's going to see it once it's assembled, after all... ...I went and carried on detailing the underside of the engine. With the exhaust pipes removed: I've tried to add all sorts of details - most have come from photos of the actual 908 engine, others have been based on shots of the underside of the 917's (there's a lot of similarities between the layout of the two engines) in order to fill in the gaps. I've added the eight flanges for the exhaust pipes, bulked-up the crankcase sides, fitted the access panel for the oil pump, and added the bushes and bolt heads to the main flange on the crankcase. There's also some extra detailing on the underside of the timing chain cases at the front of the engine, plus I've filled in some of the small gaps between sections. So, once it's all painted and fitted in the chassis that'll be the last anyone sees of it...but we know it's there! I'm sure I'll add a few more bits here and there before it's done, and do a bit of tidying up, but I think the engine is just about ready. The only things left now are the throttle linkage, a bit more on the inlet trumpets...and that's probably about it. Have a good weekend! ScratchBuilt |

Re: 1/8 Porsche 908/03
Looking really good SB.
I'm confused about the engine differences too after reading up on the 917 for future projects. I have pictures of the 917 engine with one, two and no oil filter hatches! What goes on? |

Re: 1/8 Porsche 908/03
Hello Cinqster,
The first batch of 917 engines would have had the two round hatches in the bottom of the crankcase, but once they started racing the cars during the 1969 season they had some problems with cracks at these positions. I might be wrong, but I think I remember reading that David Piper's car had this problem - I'm sure they had to repair the crankcase at a race somewhere using part of a mag alloy wheel! (just checked 'Excellence Was Expected' - yes, it happened at Kyalami!) Anyway, at some unspecified point (probably during the 1969-70 off-season) they removed these two openings, so I would guess that most 917's will now have the later-type crankcase. The only photo I have found of the underside of the revised case is in 'EWE', but I am sure there are others out there (I haven't checked the Vasek Polak engine auction website photos). The smaller 8-cylinder 908 engine only had the single opening, and I believe it is a feature of many of the older Porsche engines - for whatever reason, the 917 engine obviously didn't like it! SB |

Re: 1/8 Porsche 908/03
Cheers SB,
Never been able to find a copy of 'Excellence Was Expected' at the right price! Your info makes perfect sense, looking at the chronological order of my photos. There's a good 917 engine build up site somewhere (although the pics are low res). If I recall the engine builder used to work with Vasek. |
