Head gasket or piston rings?

My friend has this Galant GTi DOHC that overheated few times because of a fault in the cooling system, and now it's eating a lot of oil and there seems to be power loss at low RPM when accelerating. The coolant boiled few times, wonder if that killed the head gasket?

We measured the compression, and it was something like 10, 11, 11, 12bar (145, 160, 160, 174psi). So there's a big difference between few cylinders. My question is: is it likely that it's only the head gasket, or should we prepare for replacing the piston rings? It's not eating or leaking any coolant, just burning oil (blue smoke). And it's burning it a lot - few days and it's empty.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Another question, do you have to take cams out before lifting the head up? The engine is interferenced, could it be done safely by setting it to TDC and being really careful with the valves?

This sounds like you need a head gasket. Rings, I doubt it.

You do not need to remove the cam usually. I have never had to remove the cam myself. You may need to rotate it back into time when you reinstall the head if it gets moved. Good Luck.

Hey it could be the piston rings I have a grand prix 1970 455 ho in it and I thought that it had a bad head gasket, turns out bad piston rings were the problem.
