Porsche 936 Turbo – Tamiya 1/24

Hello everyone. Because we are confined at home, that my Ferrari is waiting for the decals, that the Delta S4 still requires a lot of work and that I want to finish something quick (good excuse, right?), I dare with this old kit, of few pieces, that I hope finish it in a good way. Here is the box, although it is the 1/12 kit:

And here, the exploded view. We start with the bodywork, which itself has no burr problems and is well proportioned:

To highlight, the air intakes that come covered and will have to be opened!

These sockets have two plastic plates underneath which logically should disappear.

As for the chassis, little to say because in addition to being little, it is purely functional since it was prepared to put an electric motor! We can try dirtying techniques !!

And here you have the rest of the exploded view: seats, tires, wheels and … little more!

And we start with the work, opening the front gills. Here we see that the ones on the left side are already open:

If we look at the inside, we see what I have had to remove, thanks to the mini drill!

And here I show you two gills, already open, and with traces of green putty, used to fill the traces of the work!

Another task performed is to open the air intake, both for the front part and the part corresponding to the body.

Here I have already pasted it. Say that the two horizontal panels had to be redone:

And like the real car, it is an air intake belonging to the body, without panel lines, which are filled with putty:

And here, once sanded, waiting for the primer to see differences:

Pasamos a la parte trasera. Del alerón, tapamos las marcas del molde:

Now, we move to the back. From the spoiler, we cover the mold marks:

Después tendrá us corresponidnetes tornillos:

And we added manual control of the rear wing plane. A brass rod and a piece of plastic grooved in the center to insert the rod, which I have flattened at its end with pliers. Then you will have the corresponding screws:

And another piece I’m working on is the backplane containing the lights and a position light:

Another improvement point: the headlights. They come in white plastic like what you see in front, which I am going to replace with some from Scale production, but which ones? I decide on the ones on the right of the photo !!

More modifications: we open the exhaust pipes with a bit to deepen the hollow and decrease the sides:

As for the chassis, little to say. We will only have to detail the cockpit as much as possible because it is the only thing that can be seen, and try fouling and aging techniques!

This is all for now, Thanks for watching and commenting!

Re: Porsche 936 Turbo – Tamiya 1/24

Hello everyone. In this post of the Porsche 936, I am going to show you the various modifications that I make to the kit. Comparing it with original photos, it has many deficiencies, that they will make the model look more like a real reduced car, and not a toy car . What I feel about this update is that there is little color in the photos, since it is a basic work, so that next stages are favorable.

We start with the part that has the taillights. In addition to the lights being simple pieces of white plastic, this piece contains a strip at the bottom, which is actually part of the bodywork and is attached to the sides of the body in the real car, forming a single piece. If we glue the original part in place, there will be some gaps in the union of its ends, not giving continuity to the body. Therefore, we make another piece with two plastic strips, which we will attach to the body:

If we turn the body around, we see the new piece stuck to its ends. We have taken the opportunity to glue the two side parts of the body on the bottom. Later we will see this same angle of the body in subsequent processes.

And of course, we remove this strip from the original part, cutting it after marking the cut line with the Tamiya 0.2mm scriber. Another advantage of separating the two pieces is that what I have cut, it has to be painted in white color like the body, and the base of the lights will be Martini red, making it much easier to paint:

Once cut, we see how the piece of lights will be put in its hole:

Now, to equalize the whole set, I apply Squadron putty, and spread it with a bit of acetone and a brush:

Ya está lijada!. Lo comprobaremos con la imprimación:

It’s already sanded! We will check it with the primer:

We go to the process of replacing the white plastic lights. The first thing is to create a mold with Oyumaru, that once heated in boiling water, and put around the piece, I introduce it in fresh water so that it hardens again:

…y sacamos la pieza:

… and we take out the piece:

Over that mold, I put Acrifix, glue for methacrylate that solidifies with the rays of the sun in a few minutes, which once dry, I cut, and polish, as seen in the photo.

In turn, I remake the round pilot with carved aluminum in the mini drill, and of course, cut out all the components that I am going to replace in the part:

Let’s move to the front, to the hole where the radiator goes. If I do it as the instructions say, you will see the joints of the lower part, which is where the radiator is attached. I decide to glue the lower part before painting the body, to eliminate the lines of union of the part, so the radiator must be glued afterwards. To do this, I remove the two sticks that would fit into the bottom piece, and add a ribbon to the radiator from behind, to give it a correct depth.

We cover the injection marks on the bottom part …

…. we glue it and put putty in the joints:

Here we have the result, once the joints of the part with the body have been sanded. I take this photo to show you, the process with the headlights. Thanks to some colleagues, I have decided to eliminate the headlights that I had planned, for more real ones. As a first step, I fill the hole in the bottom of the headlights with a piece of plastic, and with putty later, which is to place the glass, and the headlights of the model:

Since I am not going to use the headlight piece or the photoetched parts that I showed in the previous post, I make some cones where the headlights will go, to give it the depth and a real shape. In turn, I remove the parts of the glass, which are embedded in the body, both in the rear and the front, and which served to fix the glass. We see the rectangular hole in the left headlight, which we must fill, and how the glass would look in the right headlight,

And how do we make the headlights? First we take the glasses that were left over from the auxiliary headlights of the Opel Manta kit, and an aluminum tube. I put the tube on the coordinate table to be able to measure well, and I cut 1 mm rings with the mini drill . Here we see the rest of the tube, two rings, two glasses and two mounted headlights:

And here we see them placed. I’ll have to enlarge the headlight sockets more because they still look small. I do this work with the mini drill and a special milling cutter:

And to finish the post, we turn to the few parts of the engine, which I join with BlueTack to see how it looks:

And we add a little detail. Looking at real photos, I see that there are four small sheets around the trapezoidal tube. So I take the brass, and mark it to cut it and file some corners, make the trapezoids, not yet made in the photo:

Once glued and primer, this is the result. I have to check some mold line, and go to the painting:

The next thing I have to do is finish sanding the body filler, and go to paint.

Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Re: Porsche 936 Turbo – Tamiya 1/24

Another small push to the Porsche 936 project. In the previous post, we left the body ready to prime, and I did it. I gave him three thin layers of Gravity, being this the result:

But, of course, even if you look the body in detail, there are times when some details escape from you, which are seen with the primer. Here you have a jump in the union of the two pieces:

However, the back part already looks better:

More details to correct: certain laps on the side that needed more sandpaper:

On the right side, it was also necessary to sand more:

And at the bottom rear: sandpaper and more sandpaper

Once everything was fixed, an excess of primer made it come out rough, therefore, more sandpaper:

But once it was sanded and reprimed, it was time for the paint: four thin coats of Brilliant white Zero:

I also took the opportunity to paint almost all the rest of the parts of the kit, of which the engine parts were the ones that took the most work. A first coat of Extra Metal Aluminum from Zero:

Y negro satinado también de Zero:

And satin black also from Zero:

And to the engine parts, I masked them first, and then I applied Sepia, translucent blue, and Alclad burnt iron:

And to finish the painting step, I masked the front air intake …

…para pintarla de rojo Martini de Zero:

… to paint it in red Martini from Zero:

This is the result, along with the radiator and the back plate of the headlights. Say that some small red marks went to white, but nothing important !!

Say that I passed an ultra fine sandpaper sponge to the body to make it ready to put on the decals, since the surface is very smooth. Next day, decals step!!

Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Re: Porsche 936 Turbo – Tamiya 1/24

I wanted to start with the process of putting the decals in the previous post, but it has been truncated. My friend Borja suggested me to remove the side lights that illuminate the numbers at night in 24 hour races. And although the body was painted, I looked for different lights on Spotmodel, I found them and I got on it. In short, there were only two lights that I had to eliminate.

To start this thread, I show you the two parts that I painted in red. The back that I am going to glue so that it will be lacquered with the body ……

And the front, with the filter placed without gluing. I guess I’ll mess it up a bit:

I take advantage of this update to show you the process of the wheel hubcaps. Seeing that the nuts were complicated to paint well, and that I didn’t really like the way to fix the hubcap with bolts if it was, I started looking for some nuts to replace them. And since I was looking for the side lights on Spotmodel, I looked for some nuts and asked for them !! In the next photo I show you an original and another with the Scale Production nut superimposed. They were valid !!

So with the mini drill and a flat, cylinder-shaped grinding wheel, I was filing the center of the hubcap until the original plastic nut disappeared. Here we see two hubcaps with their rigid nuts, and the two wheels with the hubcaps superimposed with the new nuts. Say the front rims need the lug nut with that big stud to fix them, but I’ve had to cut the stud on the rear because they don’t need to be attached.

Y aquí, todo listo para pintarlas:

And here, everything is ready to be painted:

We turn to the side lights. Here I show you the originals of the kit. As Borja said well, although the shape was not wrong, the base was extremely wide:

So I proceed to cut and sand them. We see next to it, the bag with the lights that I will put on, which consist of a photoengraving for the base and a ball for the light. They come from Profil24.

We proceed to mask for priming and painting. I take advantage to also paint the back as I saw an extra point of paint !!

And here, all done: primed with Gravity and painted with Brilliant Zero (which isn’t shiny!):

And since Spotmodel was going to send me the above parts (and some other things …) very quickly, I took advantage and asked them for a grid to cover the NACA entrances behind, (of the four, those at the ends), which allow the passage air to the two turbos. Here you see the grille and the air intake to cover:

I thought about making a mold to make the grill by pressure, but since the body was painted, I did not want to damage it. So I used masking tape and drew the outline of the NACA shot:

Eso lo pasamos a la rejilla….

We pass it to the grid …

And we cut it with a scissors, leaving an edge, to fold it. To do this, I used flat-nose pliers and shaped, with the method of testing every time I modified the grid. This one was allowed to bend and it was even shaped by pressing against an iron piece. Say that for the corners, I cut the grid at an angle so there would be space when folding the sides. Here we see one setting and another to be put:

And here, the two sets, being the result great!!

Now yes, I hope the next is the decals !!

Thanks for viewing and commenting!!

Re: Porsche 936 Turbo – Tamiya 1/24

In the previous post, I left the car ready to put the decals, and here you have it, with the decals on:

But before to show all the photos, I show you other advances that I have made. First with the exhaust parts with the turbos. When checking original photos, I notice that the whole part of the turbo has a slight rust color. To reproduce it, I use the MIG oxide wash, which I apply with a brush. You can see the finish it has in the following photos:

Another point that I changed are the tires. Remember that I removed the nut that came in the kit, and that I would use the Scale Production nut. Here we have a couple of photos where you can see the set without pasting. The nuts have a layer of Alclad dark Aluminum and a wash with Smoke:

And now yes, these are the photos of the decals. To say that I had problems at the beginning because they are very thin, and with Micro liquids they became extremely fragile, so I decided to use only water and a dryer, and then the Micro Set. For the grids, I applied the decal helping me with a cotton swab, but not much. Once they were a little dry, I cut them with a new cutter on the front part, so that the rest of the decal adheres to the grid, and applying Micro Set with a brush, which I put through each slot.

The complication of the decals of this car, apart from the grilles, were not the Martini bands, but placing the rest of the logos in the same position on the two sides of the body, so it put the one on one side without fixing it and then put the other one on the other side. After checking the positions of both decals, even with a ruler, he fixed them.

Now, we have to fix some small flaws in the decals with paint, and we will move on to lacquer. We will also get the chassis and the cockpit.

Thanks for viewing and commenting!
