F1 owners timepiece

Just wondering if anyone has photos of the TAG Heuer timepiece that was given to new owners of the F1... Rowan Atkinson alludes to this watch in the June EVO article of the F1 vs Carrera GT. (Hopefully it's nicer than the SLR watch...)

Thanks

TAG has done a few McLaren watches in the past in relation to the Formula One team, and photos of them could be considered somewhat common. As for the watch that was given to customers along with the purchase of a McLaren F1, I have yet to see a photo of it unfortunately.

Re: F1 owners timepiece

Yeah, I've seen the Team McLaren Mercedes watches. I'm a bit of a TAG Heuer fan tho (I've got a Kirium Formula 1 with bracelet band) but this is the first i've heard of the F1 owners watch... I'm dying to see it...

Re: Re: Re: F1 owners timepiece

I doubt that's it.

That looks like a Team McLaren Kirium Ti5 Quartz Chronograph or similar.

I'd expect the Owners one would have the F1 logo (as opposed to the Team McLaren Formula 1 logo) And it would also be a COSC chronometer.

Also, the Kirium range was developed in 1997, 4 years after the car...

You've struck on the key point - the watch for the F1 road car would probably have the "F1" logo somewhere on it's face instead of the McLaren International logo with the 'swoosh'. I've never seen an image of a TAG watch like that, so I have a strong feeling that I've never seen the one that came with the car.

I have taken a liking to this particular watch - it's very similar to the one he posted.

My brother wears a blue-faced TAG Kirium, and it's very nice, but I find it hard to justify spending that much on on a watch when you can walk up to anyone and ask them what time it is for free.

They are expensive. My Kirium F1 was a gift to myself after a 6 month deployment to the middle east. and i got about 30% off retail.

I've gone all ga-ga over their latest concept watch, the Monaco V4

Throws conventional watch-making wisdom right out the door...

Hey - don't pigeon hole me here. This is not an apples to apples comparison you are making.

To me, a watch is just a watch. For me, they tell time and for others they act as a fancy piece of jewelry. That's fine, everyone has different tastes. The CEO of my company buys million dollar pieces of artwork to decorate the corporate office and wears cuff links everyday - none of that is for me.

For decades I wore a Timex Ironman digital watch and couldn't have cared otherwise. I would get a new one when the markings on the buttons wore off, or the strap broke or it finally stopped working. They did their job quite well though.

I wear a Citizen chronograph now, which is a much nicer watch (actually has a metal band as opposed to the plastic strap on the Timex ) but it only cost about the price of 4 of those Timex's and it was given to me as a gift. Frankly I'd have survived with just another Timex and it's not something I would have paid for with my own money, but I wear it since it was given to me by someone I care about. I'll say it again: to me, a watch is a watch. Of course I can look at a "nice" one and see that it is nice, but I give no real importance to a nice watch.

A car on the otherhand, especially a car like the McLaren F1, offers immense benefits over other cheaper cars. There might be a few that can do what the F1 does in some respects for less money, but in the end the F1 will still give you more in nearly every category in my opinion. I could elaboarte on this further, but I think most of you here know all the reasons an F1 is superior to nearly every other car, and like me, you probably give more importance to those things then you do a fancy watch.

I can't argue with you there, but the irony of the whole situation just struck me as funny. That's all.

I had occasion to see the owners edition watch a few years ago when selling a road car. It didn't seem too spectacular except that the car's chassis number was on the face. I apologize for not having a better memory but as I said it was a few years ago and it looked like another TAG to me.
The original owner of the car wouldn't include it with the car sale and the factory told me they wouldn't commission another one for the new owner.

Best
Steve

Your description jives with what I had heard about the owner's watch too. Thanks for the input as always Steve.

Does Mr Selldorff still post on here?? I guess he might be the only one who could provide a pic of the watch.
