Question cant find drum brakes for 62 nova

i need to change my brakes but i cant find drum brakes for this car. my mechanic friend said he cant find the drums for it anywhere and not only that, he cant even get the drums off and he might have to cut them off and convert it to disc brakes.. because the drums are rusted on there. well money is tight and i just wanted to change the brakes, cuz thats all the car needs. but now hes telling me i have to buy disc brakes ($800) and the labor ($300). does that even sound reasonable? and is this my only option?? not only that, but he said id have to change the lug pattern from 4 to 5 lug pattern. sounds like a lot more money to me. and thennnn i have to buy new rims to go on the 5 lug pattern. i just bought this car and now im broke and its my only transportation. brakes is all that needs fixed on it. all i want to do is drive it and this is turning into a nightmare. so my question is, where can i find some drums, for a 1962 chevy nova, so i can just change the drums on it and drive away? or is there a cheaper route for the disc brake conversion?

for the guy doing the repairs cutting off the drums and modifying your vehicle is good for him/ bad for you.

I suggest buying a high quality penitrating oil. apply every day for 2 weeks. remove the wheels . then after a couple of weeks with this working into the metal it will loosen ..taping the drum with a hammer not too hard should shock the rust grip loose.

here in the rust belt this quite the norm. when installing the drum use antisieze on the hub surface. you will never have this problem again.

1962 vehicle is/should not be your main tranportation vehicle. that vehicle is why your broke. nice vehicle for show.

thanks for the advice j cat. but do you know where i can order the drums for this car? i figured the reason he gave up so quickly was to save him from the labor and getting his hands dirty and to make his job easier and to make more money from it. but yeah, it will cost me a lot more to do what he is saying. i thought about using the oil to loosen it up, he never even brought that up. well as far as transportation goes. the nova i just bought is emaculate!! inside and out. all it needs is brakes. so i figured no biggie just 100 or 200 and ill be on the road. not the case. i can not find the drums anywhere!! not only that but i had another car for this reason. i was gonna fix the brakes and see if anything else needed fixed before i sold my other car and used this as my daily driver. BUT! i live in a bad neighborhood and a few nights ago. i go out to my car and the window was busted out. i try to start my car and it wont start. pop the hood, the distributor was stolen! lol. then the next day, it got towed! so now im stuck with no car and hoping to fix the nova asap. so if you or anyone knows where i can order the drums thatd be awesome. thanks!

Re: cant find drum brakes for 62 nova

in the area you live with no crime control you need a smashed up vehicle that fits into the location. the nova sticks out and becomes a target.

the nova you have is not going to get a new drum. to change over to disc which is what Nova owners do , you will require both front and rear conversion to disc brakes. it will cost a good amount. after you fix it it will end up in mexico.

work the drums with penitrating oil [not wd-40] .. then replace the shoes and see how it goes. best do the front shoes also.

I did find drums for the 64-74 nova. bd-2045 5 hole drum 9.5 dia.
