truck overheating but gauges do not indicate overheating

Can anyone tell me why my truck is overheating but the gauges do not read that it is overheating. I have taken it to the shop and they say everything is okay but it continues to overheat. (steam coming from under hood) thanks.

This is what you would at least check for a 1999 X.

There are two items you need to check. You have the thermostat, which sends the reading to the Gauge Cluster. You also have an ECT (Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor), which sends the actual temp to the Computer. Most likely you have a bad ECT, since youR gauge cluster isn't showing hot.

Hopefully this helps. Let us know of the results.
