Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
I had to figure out how to properly make the doors open. Since the Porsche doors didn't have a straight angle, the placement of the hinge was very critical.
Now I can reinfoce the parts and the remove the door to continue detailing the door sils |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
Small steps. But in the end I'm confident I will have working doors that look realistic.
First some more work on the doorsteps by putting an extra layer of styreen to get that stepped shape. Then I used a bit of Milliput to finish the sides of the doors. I now need to wait for it to cure and than carfully sand and detail it The next step is then going to be working on the door sills. I need to be aware that the paint will add some thickness that I need to calculate in. let's cross the fingers I can make these doors close nicely. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
I wanted to see where the gaps and imperfections were, so sprayed a bit of primer.
I already knew I needed to put some attention to the rear trunk, but on a macro picture like this, it looks like a catastrofe :o Next step was lightly sanding the primer so it shows the imperfections that need a bit more filler. Of screen I've been doing this a second time so all should be smooth after that. And then it is on to the front trunk and repeat the process. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
Macro photo's always bring out the worst in a model :S
But the I like the curse in the door sill. A bit more focus on the small ridges and I can call that part done. The rear truck is also coming along nicely. A few scratches still, that only popped out when looking at these pictures. With the naked eye they are hard to spot. And finaly a view of the front trunk. I haven't spend much time on this area yet, so I'm not surprised I need to work on this Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
I wasn't very pleased with the passenger side door sill. The driver side looks fine
But here on the passenger side there is a large gap. The only way to resolve is to strip it back partially and add a bit of styrene to the back to support the filler. Then a new strip of styrene to make the correct shape and apply the filler That looks a lot better now Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with the front trunk as well. The opening was too big and therefor I couldn't get the right details in. I had to cut into the model again and scratch a new and better trunk outline. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
So... I've printed the new hood insert. The picture (although a bit blurry) shows the difference in thickness.
I have now glued it in place and it looks really nice. Also the hood seems to close a bit better. The little bit of extra clearance granted me the opportunity to add the rubber where the hood rests on. It was made from 0.5mm Evergreen rod. I like how it breaks up the flat area. And a bit of a side project are there air intakes for a Porsche 996 Turbo I want to make. I still need to fit them, but at first glance they seem pretty accurate. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
Sometimes you just want to put all parts together and enjoy how the project is coming along.
And then on to the next bit... I've added the brake booster (cover) and are working on the 2nd part of the rubber seal for the lid. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
With all rubber seals in place, I started work on the housing for the engine fluids.
It still looks a bit rough, but I need to add some more putty and sand it down again. I'll get it right. Also shaped the filler caps. All in all I'm quite happy for my first time in scratch all there details. Next up will be the creation of the lid hinges. No clue yet what the best way is to make it work and look good at the same time. To be continued... Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
An evening fiddling around with the result of a hinge and has spring. Next time I need to do this more earlier on. With the trunk space partially filled it was difficult to reach into the corners.
But... here is my first proof of concept Next up I shortened the spring to 5cm and then I had to look for the exact locations to mount the spring. The hinge is still not permanently fixed so the model is more easy to paint. Construction of scratch built work its coming to an end. Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
For the trunk lid I also was working on a hinge. However this is more complex, because the lid needs to lift slightly.
Scratch building wasn't working out for me. So I turned to Blender again an designed scale model hinges based on the original. Hopefully I can it to work. First a glans at the originals. These are the different parts of the hinge. The longest part is mere 7.75mm long All the parts can be assembled using 0.5mm pins. Arno |

I don't sure you can realise these hinges. Anyway, I wish you good luck!

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
Yeah, I understand. But now is the time to try. I have the printer, so there isn't much effort on this. Fingers crossed
If it doesn't work, I can still create some very basic hinges in stead. I hope to be printing over this weekend as I promised to help out another modeler as well. |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
As some had their doubts already, the printing failed. Perhaps if I made the parts a bit thicker, but that does require quite some adjustments.
I went back over using aluminum plate (0.3mm) and viewed some other modelers on how to best work it. It took me a lot of time and failed parts, but I managed to finally get a working hinge Now, the pins will come loose if you operate the hinge, so I need to figure out how to best fixate them. But it will help, attaching the hinge to the car to make it more rugged. And I'm confident it can hold the lid open well. All in all... quite pleased with the result. Now it is up to number 2... jep, it takes two, baby! Arno |

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya
I've been away for a while. Reason? This hinge for the rear trunk lid really kicked me in de head a couple of times. I had to do several iterations and finally had to revert back to a more simpler design.
Some of my experimental parts Now I've primed the body for paint. Hopefully some color this weekend Arno |
