Cool 04 Mazda 3, 3rd gear rpm flare.

I have a 2004 3. Will not shift from 2nd to 3rd. Well, it does, but the engine revs up, then it goes into limp in mode (2nd gear). Code indicated Shift Solenoid C was stuck ON. Replaced all the solenoids and new filter. drove it. Same issue. Took the valve body out and made sure all of the internal valves were free to move. Good. Air tested the clutch packs. Heard air leak on the rear port. This is a port that goes to the rear cover and direct clutch. WHAT IS THE problem? Has anyone else had this issue? Help. ( I am an ASE Master Tech ) I rebuilt alot of transmissions. I am hoping I will not have to rebuild this one.

Re: 04 Mazda 3, 3rd gear rpm flare.

I found the problem. The rear cover has a hub that wears out. This hub has the sealing rings, for the direct clutch and reverse clutch, on it. The direct clutch sealing ring groove was worn to about twice the normal width and the sealing ring was broken. It was easy to remove and the new one was only 79 dollars on ebay. Ring kit was 20 dollars on the same site. Total repairs cost around 250 dollars (including Trans fluid, solenoids, Rear cover, Ring kit, and new filter).
