Government Liquidation question

so i am on a quest for a deuce and a half. i have been looking on gov' liquidation, i have seen some nice looking ones and some not so nice ones, in the past 4 months. but i am new to shopping for military vehicles what would be somethings to watch out for? especially from Gov' liquidation. any question i should ask them in specificly? or other good places to find old deuce and a halfs?
thanks for the help

Re: Government Liquidation question

Long bed or short bed? The ones I recall and liked were the M35 series (short bed) and M36 series (long bed). Make sure the 4 wheel drive is working or at least repairable. Transfer case, clutch and transmissions may be dogged out. Also, depending on how old make sure it has a turbocharger. Most 1976 and up AM General models should have one. Last but not least look for any possible signs of battle damage.

Re: Government Liquidation question

very cool, do you know if the m35's are relatively easy to work on or does it take a shop with a mechanic?
thanks for your help.
happy holidays

Re: Government Liquidation question

You're welcome and Happy Holidays to you too.

IMO yes. These were designed to be maintained by soldiers/military in the field based on categories of maintenance. 1st, 2nd and 3rd eschelon, etc. When I was in the Army we had to do operator maintenance at specified intervals according the the Tech Manuals (TMs) and the TAMS (Army Maintenance Management) system. Dailies, Weeklies, Monthlies, Semi-Annual and Annual. I recall working with the 2nd eschelon mechanics that were school trained as Motor Mechanics. What I like is the engines and trannies are easy to access. Parts like glow plugs, injector pump, generator and starters are easy to replace. A creeper comes in handy. It would help to have basic knowledge of Diesel engines. Some of the older M35s were gas engines that ran on Mogas but I would stay away from them. Also, those Mogas M35s had automatic transmissions.

I would recommend looking on the Internet or at those government surplus sales places to see if they have the old Tech Manuals. They were written at the 5th grade level but fairly comprehensive.

BTW - The companies that made them were Kaiser-Jeep and AM General. Fuel economy varies at around 5 - 10 miles per gallon.

Good luck!
