It needs some work on the paint(nothing some Zainos won't cure) and a little work on the interior. Then maybe some new rims |

Zenarcher, the best source for parts is www.20thstreetauto.com
They've got fair prices on used parts. And there's nothing wrong with 951's. They're just too heavy. Now get a 924... Drop in a 951 engine, a little tweak here, a little tune there...

Re: The 951
I had a 951 it was a fun car...with simple bolt on stuff that car was a beast. Chip/filter/wastegate/exhuast/cv bypass I was at 18-20lbs of boost.

The 951 is the internal model designation for the 944 turbo. There are two street model versions. The 951 was first intruduced in 1985 1/2 as an 86 model. It had 217 HP and 243 tq. Dual airbags and ABS were added for 87, 88. For 88 1/2 the tusbo S was intruduced. The turbo S is the road version of the "Cup Race car". Major difference was in the DME, Brakes, Suspension. In it's time it was one of the fastest production car ever made. 162 mph stock. It had 247 HP. If you want to see more discussions on the 951 or the 944 go to Rennlist.

951's rock!
in response to the original question, i think the 951 rocks
i dont own a 951, i almost bought one but had to buy a pickup (200 s-10) for my job. however...ive spent hours and hours researching the car, lusting over it, whatever, but i did find alot of good info. the maintenance problems are fairly predictable, and include things like water entry, oil/antifreeze heat exchanger leaks, power steering, engine mounts, clutch....the key is, dont buy one without a good detailed maintenance record. the great thing is...the car might suck as a stock car being at least 14 years old....but porsche purposely built it to underperform its more expensive models at the time. However, they gave it the potential to outperform any stock porsche. i dont have a number here...ive been out of the game for a while, but the rear axle handles waaay more power than the stock engine ever put out. there are a wealth of great aftermarket performance parts and mods out there, not all of them are good (for example...autothority's chip upgrades SUCK) but most are...just do the research. I have seen 951's that produced over 500 horsepower. best site ive found for upgrades so far is lindsey racing. theyll sell you just about any performance part ever made. you can even get new solid engine mounts for $60 a piece. if i had a 951...which i hopefully will someday...i would start by replacing the chips, again not with autothority chips, then i would probably change the boost control....after that, maybe up the turbo size, give it a new head gasket, water pump, to avoid problems.... and probably the greatest 951 mod ever is to replace the stock afm with a modern MAF. Ive read alot of discussion over whether to use MAP or MAF and i would say go MAF, but get something like a stage 1 or 2 so you can still pass emissions. this will be the best horsepower/performance increase ever. it takes away most of the lag and dramatically increases the flow. after you modify the airflow enough you have to monitor the injector duty cycle and probably get a high volume fuel pump and bigger injectors. also look for rising rate fuel pressure regulator..... the list of mods goes on...you can reflow your cylinder heads, get a new intake manifold(the stock one gives more air to one side of the engine than the other!!), and of course, a new exhaust its really an awesome car! this post is off the top of my head and like i said, i havent looked at any 951 sites for a while but here are some: www.lindseyracing.com (check out the MAF kits!!) http://members.rennlist.org/951_racerx/ (awesome site) http://www.kokeln.com/products/ (turbos and more) somewhere, i have a whole list of links that deal with maintenance issues, practical modification problems, testimonials, etc, ill have to look for them. hope this is relevent and helps somebody!!! |
