Power Steering return line cooler
On my '96 Windstar, I have the standard PS cooling (no radiator), and Friday it sprang a leak from corrosion.
The cooling line runs across the bottom of the front of the radiator, behind the front bumper cover. Because it is located behind the bumper cover you must remove the cover (at least partially) to access the cooling line. I only needed to detach it from the passenger side. I did this by taking out: -4 screws across the bottom. -5 plastic rivets across the top. The key to these is to push the center in before prying up. I used a hammer & punch with light taps. Don't drive them completely through or you'll have to look for the pins to reuse them. -5 or 6 screws that hold the plastic splash shield to the cover. Several of these screws could not be turned with a screwdriver, so I flattened the sides with a handheld rotary tool (e.g. Dremel) to grab with pliers. However, I found that I had to work them back and forth to avoid breaking the heads off. -2 nuts behind the quarter panel -1 nut that holds the front running/turn signal light -1 screw behind the turn signal light. Then you can remove the cooler (2 screws/plastic clips), 2 hose clamps. |

Re: Power Steering return line cooler
I have a PS cooler story, not better than yours ... just different. :
I had noticed while driving down the Pacific Coast with all the winding roads, that my '99 PS was overheating and whining. So as I later installed the largest air cooler, for the tranny, that would fit in front of the radiator and ac coil...I moved all tranny fluid cooling to the new air cooler. This left a section of the radiator vacant ... so I series the vacated section of the radiator with the original PS cooler. A better life for the tranny and the PS. This added a lot of volume to the PS system. |
