Shift Knob Removal
Hey guys,
I know there is previous thread on this subject but the true answer is not heard yet so I am posting it again. Is there anyone in here who is practical expert and know how to remove the stock shift knob without completely damage? I removed it once before but I destroyed it. If anyone know please advise. From my previous shift knob removal experience, I noticed at the end of the knob there is a hard rubber bolt and it is partially molded to the steel shifter. If with proper tool one can force it ccw and have it removed. Oh..and there is also an o-ring half way down the shifter that needed to be removed as well. Anyway, I am afraid that if I put enough torque I may twist the shifter and consequently damage the shifter linkage at the bottom. Has anyone replaced their shift knob lately?

try wiggling it while you jerk it furriously...
Some shift knobs come off really easily when you just turn and pull, some, you gotta have a crazy kung fu grip.

last time I did I stripped the leather grip off then slice out the rubber knob. i am not sure if jerking furiously will help remove it without damage to the shifter

I removed mine on saturday you just have to be gentle. i put on a momo carbon fiber knob, which was more of a bitch than removing the old one. THe o ring should slide off after you get the top ring off.

Gawd I don't know how many times I've posted this but noone seems ot listen.
Get a big enough adjustible wrench and an towel. Wrap the towel around the knob and use the adjustible wrench to twist it off. Make sure you turn it the right way. I've taken two knobs off so far, both in perfect condition! |

Jason,
I have thought of that method of removal but my concern is putting that much torque on the knob, will it affect the linkage like twisting and putting it out of place?

Well you can always remove the shifter and park a car on the knob while you twist off the shifter.
My way is easier. |

I threw a shop towel around mine and used a pipe wrench. Came off without a scratch and very easily, I might add. My GReddy knob is nice and shiny.
