SB, as others have said, this is a time of mixed emotions for me. Pleasure at seeing what you have achieved and my own selfish sadness that your amazing build has come to is end. It has been a privilege to follow this build from day one, the extra time you have so generously given us all by way of posting in such incredible detail the entire build.

To hear that your next project will be the 956.... I can hardly wait, but first, make sure to "bask in the glory" of your OUTSTANDING achievement!


Will there be public access to view 'Moby Dick' from time to time?

Hello again,

I don't mind admitting that it does feel a bit odd for me right now - I've lived with all things 935 for so long now and have been looking forward to getting this project completed, there's a part of me that's still thinking 'is it really finished?'.

I've been blown away by all your replies and comments - saying 'thank you' to you all doesn't really seem enough...but thank you. It gives me a lot of pleasure to know that there a few people out there who are interested in what I do!

I know - mine doesn't have the radio aerial on the roof! This was a deliberate decision, not a mistake - it would only get broken or knocked off . If I had been clever I could have sunk a small magnet into the roof and made the aerial removable, but that's something that needed to be worked into the build a few years ago! I must remember to do that on future projects...

Regarding AFMOTY, I am very pleased to see it running again this year - but I won't be entering the 935. I said several years ago that I wouldn't, and I'm sticking by that! One of these days I'll have to build one of the many Porsche kits I have in my stash, but I don't think it would be up to MOTY standard!

I have one question though and I hope I can ask it without any offense being taken, but why did you replicate the louvers in the fenders the way you did? The actual car ran with slat louvers and slot louvers on the front fenders and only slat louvers in the rear. You replicated the slats using slots and omitted the slot louvers on the front fenders altogether. Was there some trouble you ran up on? it seems like this would have been fairly simple compared to some of the other magic you have created. I was just wonder what lead to this path.

Hello Derek,

Don't get me started on the louvres...!

What's probably not obvious from the photos is that I tried to file the leading edge of each slot to create more of a proper louvre effect, but with the fibreglass only being of limited thickness this could only go so far.

My experience with fibreglass told me that trying to mould the louvres into the panels from the start was not going to be possible - particularly on the nose where they could only be positioned accurately after the rad exit ducts had been fitted. Whenever I've tried to fibreglass really fine details it's not been 100% successful - even with the thin cloth I use you get a build-up of material and resin that starts to wipe out whatever detail you're trying to create!

Painting the Martini stripes was always a concern from the first stages of this project - the fact that they would also have to interact with the slots / louvres didn't help, either. For a long time I was in two minds about whether to paint first then slot, or slot then paint...with pros and cons for both. I certainly had visions that the masking was going to be an absolute nightmare, that there would be too much paint bleed or blow-under...but in the end I felt that the chances of screwing up a successful paintjob by cutting the slots afterwards was too great, and I would have to deal with any masking issues as they happened. As it turned out, the masking was fine, no major issues with the painting, and the end result (to me) was totally satisfactory!

Regarding the quantity of louvres, again, in the WIP I mentioned that they varied from reference to reference. Yes, most of the period photos at races have the extra sets on the nose, but some don't - I chose this option. The exact style and positioning of the Martini stripes also changes from race to race - my measurements were based on the Tamiya decal kit!

Besides, I've got to have something I can improve on next time, right?!

I just registered with AF for the express purpose of paying you compliments for this build. I've been following this one and I check for updates every month or two... and I've been a bit behind. Just caught up, finished the build, and popped into this thread to see the finished pics.

Amazing. Your craftsmanship is outstanding. The commitment of time that you put into these models is shown in the quality of the finished product. Like others, I'm sad for the end of the process. Building models, or full size cars, is about the process often more than the end product. The finished car is a work of art my friend... but the journey you took us on is second-to-none. Thanks for that.

To sum up... it's a beautiful model you've made and you deserve loads of credit. And I feel compelled to thank you.
