Starting Engine after years of sitting
Hello guys,
I'm planning to start the engine on my GTO after about 5 years of sitting in the garage. the engine had no mechanical problems, the only problem was the + cable from the battery to the starter, i finally got a replacement and planning to start the engine. it's a 455 HO engine, I will do the below steps before starting it up, my question is should I do anything else or in a different order before starting? 1 drain and change the engine coolant from the radiator and the engine. 2 change the oil and oil filter. 3 change the spark plug. 4 drain the fuel from the carburator and fuel tank and fill new fuel. 5 pump fuel manually (pumping fuel pump manually? is there a better way?). 6 turn the engine with a wrench on the crank nut couple of turns. 7 start the engine. Main Question, should I spray DW40 or miracle oil on the piston heads from the spark plug holes and let it soak before turning the engine manually? or is there any other way of making sure the pistons rings are loose? thanks guys, appreciate any advice and help. Cheers Tony |

Re: Starting Engine after years of sitting
You can disable the fuel by pinching the fuel line to the pump or removing it from the carb. You can then ground the coil wire to disable the ignition. If you are planning to replace the spark plugs, remove the originals and do not install the replacements. Add a little oil into each cylinder via the spark plug holes.
With a fully charged battery the engine can be cranked until oil pressure is developed and clean oil is being pumped everywhere. That should allow the rings to move in their grooves since there will be no compression. Once you are satisfied there are no unusual mechanical noises and the excess oil is blown clear from the cylinders, the new plugs can be installed and fresh fuel introduced.

Thanks Blue, clearing the cylinders is a great idea. I got some of the parts I needed and waiting for a few more including new plugs.
I'll update the thread once I get it started. Cheers! |
