Problem/solution for shift indicator, shift lock and cooling system
The root of the problem on the 2003 ford escape was the shifter not being able to shift out of park when the brake was depressed. After determining it wasnt anything in the steering column (shift lock solenoid) the problem had to be under the hood. There had been a coolant leak and the radiator was (maybe incorrectly) replaced a few months ago as a (possibly incorrect) solution to a coolant leak.
It turns out there was a broken clamp on the large radiator hose leading from the thermostat assembly to the engine block. This broken clamp caused a slow leak which dripped onto the gear position switch directly below the clamp. This switch slides over a shaft coming out of the transmission that rotates based on what gear the transmission is in. The dripping coolant ruined the switch and ultimately made the indicator (above the odometer) think it was always in neutral AND drive. Since it never indicated park, the circuitry never engaged the solenoid to unlock the shifter to shift from park. If you have a similar problem, an interim solution is to remove the plastic plug from the top of the steering column revealing a switch which can be depressed to bypass the shift lock mechanism. Press this button in and you can shift out of park regardless of the brake being pressed or the key being in the ignition. To access all the parts to replace the switch or fix clamps requires removing the battery/battery box, air filter assembly and its also helpful to remove the engine plastic cover to get a wrench into the radiator hose clamps by the engine block. Hopefully this information will be useful to someone. |
