Talking Re: check engine light on and O/D off light blinking

Feb 19, 2006

Thank you all! I just purchased a used 2000 Kia Sephia for my wife recently and had the blinking O/D light and steady check engine light problem. It was a bitterly cold day and the Toyota dealership had trouble starting the car (it was -11F). They replaced the battery and we drove it for about 60 miles with no trouble.
The next morning we started on another short drive and as we were leaving we noticed the car seemed to have no power. About a half mile went by and my wife noticed the O/D light blinking. While we were trying to find the switch (thinking it might have been bumped accidently) the check engine light came on. We immediately turned the car around and parked it for the day, taking another vehicle for the days runs.
Later that night we did some research online and found this and several other threads speaking about the same problems. Since the dealership had replaced the battery right before we claimed ownership I decided to try a little test. After confirming the O/D and check engine lights were still on, I disconnect the battery. Then I jumped into the car and turned the key, allowing any residual power to be dissipated. After waiting 5 minutes, I reconnected the battery and checked to see if it made any difference.
It did! The power had returned and car easily accelerated up the hill in front of our house. The O/D and check engine lights did not turn on and I drove the car easily 35 miles in really cold weather. I will check it over the next few days and if it does return I will have someone test for the error codes.

Again, many thanks to you and this forum. It has provided us with a little relief that we did not buy a new set of headaches.

PROGRESS REPORT:

Just a note to say the Kia is still performing well after the power reset. Best little used car I have owned. Took it to a local Kia dealership and was provided a complete history of the dealer repairs free of charge. Good people it seems and very helpful with a horn problem.

Thumbs up Re: check engine light on and O/D off light blinking

Thank you westinmylifeaway. Also have a 2000 Kia, same thing you decribed happened to me yesterday. Went out, disconnected battery, cleaned connections, reconnected, drove it. Power back, warning lights not blinking.
I'll see how it goes. Thanks again for your post.

Re: check engine light on and O/D off light blinking

OK. Blinking OD and Check Engine light. 2000 Kia Sephia. It turned out to be the switch, located on top of transmission. Engine speed switch. I small bolt or screw holds the fitting in its socket with the attached collar. It took me three days to diagnose it and less than a hour start to finish, to fix it. Piece of cake.
