In the summer I dodge cones, in the winter I dodge deer
I live in the Great State of Michigan. It is the second highest state for car-deer accidents (Pennsylvania is first). I've lived here for 8 years now, and I've been driving for about half of those. I never really had any close calls with deer, until now.
Last Thursday night I was driving home from work, and there were 2 inches of snow on the ground. I was going about 50 mph, when all of a sudden this deer makes a mad dash across the road. I got on the brakes but the car did not skid (no ABS), and somehow avoided the deer. Last night I was driving a girl home, and I was going on the same road as Thursday, but this time there was no snow, and I was going 70 mph. I go around a corner less than a mile from where the first incident happened, and I see a deer standing on the shoulder of the road. The first thought that came to my mind was that I needed to slow down, because the deer will run in front of me. I get on the brakes hard, but I don't lock up the wheels. Next thing I remember is thinking that I don't need to swerve, I have enough space to slow down. Then I came to a stop, with the deer standing about 5 feet away from my car, and it runs off into the opposite direction. I said a quick "Thank you Jesus", and then floored it, and got up to 70 again. The girl then complemented me on my reaction, which felt great.

Re: In the summer I dodge cones, in the winter I dodge deer
I had a deer encounter last night while driving my friend's truck pulling a 23 (?) ft gooseneck trailer. That scared the shit outa me. I've had plenty of close calls but none that close while pulling a huge loaded trailer driving someone else's baby.

Had a similar encounter Saturday night...same general situation except I was only going 40 and I don't have ABS and my tires are beyond old. Managed to go from 40-0 faster than I ever have and managed to not lock up the tires.
That is all. [/hijacking] |

deer...bad....bad....deerr
60mph in a 70mph zone, deer ran out in front of me regardless, didn't swerve, couldn't react, halfway in my visibility and there isn't any time to react going that fast

Nope, I'm still a virgin, and I'm waiting till marriage. Andy, I'm not sure which car would be better to have an encounter with. My CRX is very agile, and I could easily swerve, but if I do hit it, there is a high chance of the deer going through my windshield and injuring me. On the other hand, with a big truck like that, you wouldn't be able to swerve, but you would not have to worry about getting injured, just damages to the truck.

Re: In the summer I dodge cones, in the winter I dodge deer
A deer lept right over the front end of my 944 on a dirt road in the mountains a few years ago...
True story.
