Tire nearly came off

I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland. In March I had new tires put on at the local Jeep dealership. Two weeks later I heard a noise from the driver's side rear and found three of the lug nuts I could move by hand. I called the Jeep dealership and they came out and re-torqued the wheel.

The beginning of August the same Jeep dealership rotated the tires. Last Thursday I was towing the Jeep behind my motor home and another driver frantically motioned me over to the side of the road. He stopped and said my rear tire (same driver's side rear) was wobbling badly. I checked, the lug nuts were sheared off, and the tire was barely on the car.

Prior to this car I had a 2003 Jeep (same model as my current car) that a front wheel almost came off of while driving on the freeway. Fortunately I was able to bring the car to a stop safely but there was over $1000 damage to the car. I had just had the tires rotated at a private auto repair shop and it appeared they hadn't torqued the tires correctly. Their insurance paid for the damage.

Does anybody know if Jeeps are prone to have tires falling off? I've driven Chevys and Fords for 30 years and never had a problem. This is scary. I could be injured or even killed or cause somebody else to have an accident if a tire falling off my car hit another car.

Re: Tire nearly came off

Anytime any kind of work is done where tires are removed it is always highly recommended to recheck the lugnuts. It's not vehicle specific.

Re: Tire nearly came off

How long after the change should the lug nuts be rechecked?

Re: Tire nearly came off

Within 100 miles.

The reason you didn't have to do this before is because of steel wheels versus aluminum wheels.
