Anybody know what this part is?
Heard a loud clunk while driving so I stopped and checked behind the tire. Does anybody know what this is?
One side looks broken, the other doesn't. |

Re: Anybody know what this part is?
What you have in the pictures is your control arm...or "a-arm" depending on who you talk to.
It looks like the bushing might be kinda fubared but its hard to tell exactly. For a clunking sound while driving, its very common for the factory swaybar to break or separate causing a clunk. The swaybar is attached to each control arm, but at the opposite end of it that you posted. They typically break near the ends. Something to check out before you go replacing control arms, because they arent cheap, whereas a swaybar is relatively cheap.

Re: Anybody know what this part is?
Yes it's the lower control arm bushing......the control arm is touching the frame and causing a metal clunking noise.....not sure if just the bushing can replaced or if you have to get a whole new lower control arm......

Re: Anybody know what this part is?
You can buy just the replacement bushings, but as to how you actually go about replacing them I have no idea.
Something to consider is that a new control arm also comes with a new ball joint, so that should keep you from having to replace them at any point in the life of your car. Or you could just pop in a new ball-joint while you have the control arm off anyway, since it will have to come off to just replace the bushings anyway.
