1990 dakota 4cyl crankshaft timing belt sprocket removal
Thought I was a pretty good mechanic! Out of options, bfh next. ! Extremely stubborn crankshaft pully needs removed to replace seal. Manual indicates a straight puller may be used but hole alignment wont allow 2. Bolt puller to be used. 3 leg puller does not allow and even pull either. Have applied pressure and tried to wedge a screwdriver between case and pulley.
Magnet indicates pulley is steel, can heat be applied without damage.? what does the inside of pully and crankshaft look like., should bolt be threaded in and pressure applied to it or is an extension used that slips into bolt hole and pressure applied to it used? |

I haven't seen this set up but I have disconnected a motor mound so I could position the engine to get a puller on a harmonic balancer pulley.

If the pulley is 100% steel, you can apply some heat. Don't use an acetylene torch, that would be too much heat. You don't want it glowing red hot, if it gets to that point, something could get warped. WD-40 or PB blaster can be helpful for this purpose too. Just spray it on and let it soak in for a while. Then go at it with your basic handheld blowtorch and whichever puller set seems to work best.

Re: 1990 dakota 4cyl crankshaft timing belt sprocket removal
Thanks for your responses. I did get nasty with it. soaked in PB blaster and heated up a little to lett it suck into the part, cut my own puller from 3/8 plate with the correct bolt pattern and used a 4 leg puller, when it did let loose the pop was load and it continued to pop and make galling noises the who way off the shaft. a little filling and some sand paper will make the shaft and balancer useable but i hop the engine blows up before that seal starts to leak again !

Better check that the pulley was not bent due to so much force needed to remove it. Any wobbles?
