2001 GA GT cooling fan running constantly and gauge set at 100 degrees

My 2001 Grand Am GT has the cooling fans running constantly and the temperature gauge stay at 100 degrees. I changed the temp. sensor but that did nothing. My heat is still good. Any suggestions?! I'm lost!!

Re: 2001 GA GT cooling fan running constantly and gauge set at 100 degrees

Welcome to AF.

If the sensor is good, check the wires to/from the sensor they can break and that sounds like your trouble.

It could also be a relay for the fans stuck on.
They are in the fuse box under the hood.

Here's a link to test your temp ciruit might be usefull.

Hope that helps.

Re: 2001 GA GT cooling fan running constantly and gauge set at 100 degrees

I had the same problem with my car. The fan always ran and the coolant temp gauge didn't move. It gave a P0128 code. I believe this means the coolant temp is taking too long to reach proper operating temperature, (Probably the thermostat is stuck slightly open)

After looking at what a pain the thermostat will be to change on the 3.4L, I decided to grab a scan tool and reset the code myself a couple of times a month. This seems to instantly turn the fans off and the temp gauge starts to work.

Once winter is over, I will tackle the thermostat, hopefuly without having to take the throttle body off.

hope this helps

Realy the thermostat on the 3.4 is a piece of cake compared to the 2.4/2.2 , which is under the pass side of the motor.

That's a PITA !
