Thumbs up 96 Altima : Trouble Starting After Head Gasket Replacement

Recently replaced the head gasket on 1996 Nissan Altima. When I turn the key to the on position I hear the fuel pump working. When I turn the ignition over the engine is turning and attempting to start. Any ideas or suggestions as to why the car is not starting?

Put cylinder 1 TDC, and recheck your timing marks.

Its definitely at TDC and the timing marks are in place. Any other suggestions?

Check for spark on each cylinder.

Re: 96 Altima : Trouble Starting After Head Gasket Replacement

Had no spark, checked coil and it was good. Starter is turning. Ignition Module Control primary coil failed test although secondary coil passed, this is true on my coil, as well as three brand new coils from 2 other parts stores, which leads me to believe that the primary coil resistence isn't stored within the coil.

Check the engine ground wire, that was taken off during the head job.

The engine ground wire is actually connected to the thermostat housing and its connected to the block of the engine. Does this car have a seperate power transistor aside from the ignition coil?

Re: 96 Altima : Trouble Starting After Head Gasket Replacement

Need to check connections + fuse's to the ignition amplifier, and ignition control unit.
There's also a ballast resistor for the coils, and a ignition capacitor that needs tobe checked.

Would the ballast resistor be the Ignition Module Control Unit? The fuses and fuse links that I've checked are all good, unless there is a hidden fuse box I haven't located yet.

I got one trouble code, without understanding they would flash three times before going into another sequence of flashes. Have to run the diagnostic once again and make sure only one code was presented.

Check both the crankshaft + camshaft sensors.
Doe's this car have a camshaft sensor? it would of been disconnected during the Head job.

The camshaft sensor is inside the distributor. The crankshaft sensor ohm'd out fine.

The trouble code is actually P0505 and it means there is no problem detected.

Have to check volts at all the different ignition parts locations I guess.

Re: 96 Altima : Trouble Starting After Head Gasket Replacement

i am having the same problem with a 97 altima GXE. i think i've tried everything i kno. the only thing left i can think of is to reset the injector timing by disconnecting the negative terminal for a good 24 hrs from what i've researched. ny other suggestions please let me kno. i think its the injectors because when i take off the fuel pump relay the car tries to crank over fine. but when i put the relay back on the car keeps jerkin on me and still wont turn over

Re: 96 Altima : Trouble Starting After Head Gasket Replacement

I guess I will try that...went out today and tried to turn the vehicle over and had the same results. Only thing is, when I changed the head gasket the battery was disconnected for days so this would have reset the ignition like your talking, I would assume.
