1988 300 ZX get hot while running

I have a 1988 Nissan 300ZX automatic that has 160,000 miles. I had bought it brand new. Recently while I was driving, the temperature gauge goes way past 3/4 middle, more to the RED HOT Zone. When I stopped the car, I can hear the water boiling. All the rubber water hoses are in perfect condition and were replaced at 154000 miles. Is there a problem with the thermostat or what? and i do smell antifreeze when the water temperature is hot and boils and I do loose some . If there is a thermostat problem, what type of thermostat should I get that open in what temperature? Is the thermostat installation easy? I have no idea .Please advice...thanks!

should help you out... and NEVER drive the car over the middle range of the water temp gauge... if it starts to go over half, pull over and let the car cool down before driving it again

check your oil if you start to have more oil than before its a bad head gastket the signs of a bad head gasket are car running hot losing antifreeze, oil level is rising (because antifreeze is getting in it) coolant will also have oil in it if its bad. Dose this sound like your car?
