'87 Cutlass Cruiser 3.8L Not Shifting

I have a 1987 cutlass cruiser, recently new catalytic converter and fuel filter. Low idle, idle pulley looks loose but what it is connected to rocks as well. engine rocks due to low idle, stalls while sitting still in drive unless foot is on accelerator peddle, and only shifts once. Over Drive doesn't kick in. My first shift is at about 25 MPH, 2nd is about 45 to 50 MPH, and then Over drive kicks in without a notice. Now, the first shift is around 35 MPH and when it shifts, it "slingshots" and looses accelerating power, running high RPM's almost redline, no second shift, no over drive. When started cold, a rhythmic ticking noise, 3 ticks a one second pause and three ticks, until it warms up. Can anyone help me? I think the problem is a crack in the weld between the catalytic converter and the engine but I can't find anything to back that up
