96 Monte Carlo Ls with HORRIBLE NOISE

So basically I got this 96 monte carlo from a jerk mexican. But that's beside the point. Maybe. It had this grinding/almost like a sizzling noise coming from the engine compartment upon idling and acceleration, but it wasn't too bad sounding. Then all of the sudden while driving it no more than 8 miles, the car starts making a horrible metal on metal noise, I lost pretty much all acceleration and had to tow it home because it sounds horrible and just doesn't have the power to do anything. i know it's not a head gasket and maybe wondered what it could be (transmission, flywheel?) Holla at me.
