Upper steering shaft replacement

How difficult is it to replace the upper and lower steering shafts on a 2001 Crown Vic?
I got the parts ordered but cannot find anything as far as instructions on how to replace and any tips on do's and do not's
Any replies are greatly appreciated.

Re: Upper steering shaft replacement

The upper shaft on the '01 will connect to a U-joint on the steering column, under the dash. Another U-joint is on the intermediate shaft that connects to the lower shaft under the hood. This is collapsible, meaning that it can be shortened. Remove the bolts on each end of the shaft and collapse it down to remove it. There should be a flange at the firewall that you will need to remove.

The lower shaft is attached to the steering gear via a 'rag joint', remove a bolt connecting the lower part of this rag joint to the steering gear, pull it off and it's removed. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

Hello again,
I just got the upper and lower shafts and will be installing today or tomorrow.
I should have asked last time but didn't think of this....Can you please tell me if there is a certain torque ft.lbs. for the bolts that connect the upper and lower shaft and to steering column?
Also, should I use blue Lock Tight on all the bolts?

Thank you ever so much again for your help!

UPDATE:
I just finished. Tightened everything up REAL good with Lock-Tite.
Very difficult getting the old off as everything was really rusted big time.
Now, I have a nice new steering shaft and you guys helped so much.

Thank You once again and may you all have a wonderful Holiday Season and a great New Year!
