Thumbs up Maserati Zagatos

Here is a Maserati A6 Zagato Coupe

I think the green car is an Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.

The 1957 Maserati 450S Costin Zagato Coupe looked exotic, but it wasn't successful on the race track.

Maserati withdrew from factory-backed sports car racing after 1957. The new MC12 is backed by the factory in the American Le Mans Series (GT1 class).

According to Car & Driver, only two street versions of the racing 450S Zagato Coupe were ever made.

For the 1957 24 Hours of Le Mans, Maserati had British aerodynamics expert Frank Costin design a low-drag coupe body to be fitted on their 400bhp 450S sportscar. The body was constructed in haste by Zagato of Milan and it was barely ready for practice.

The low-drag body look was stunning and by far the best looking car on the grid. Such aerodynamics combined with the 400 bhp engine had to be good for over 200 mph on the Mulsanne straight. After only a couple of laps, it was clear that the body didn't work as good as it looked. At the end of the straight the engine still had 1000 rpm left. The car was not able to match the 178 mph top speed set by a D-Type and it was even outpaced by the roadster-bodied 450S. This poor performance was a result of some major flaws in the design. Hot air from the radiator was being fed to the Weber carburetors. This hot air did not help the engine's performance and the 400 bhp mark was not being reached.

Stirling Moss raced the underperforming Coupe on a hard fought second place until he had to retire with a mechanical failure. After Le Mans the body was stripped of the engine and the wheels, left to rot on Maserati's scrapyard. It was found by an American in 1958 who commissioned Maserati to reconstruct the coupe for road use. A new V8 engine was fitted in the chassis that was stretched by 25 cm by Fantuzzi.

It was then shipped to United States where the engine and gearbox were completely revised by its second owner in 1961. The result was an additional 50 horses for the engine, making it the fastest road car at that time. Since then it was badly damaged in an accident. Now brought back to its 1961 state, it resides in the German Rosso Bianco museum.

1954 Maserati A6G 2000 Zagato Spyder

This one-off Zagato-designed Maserati made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show where it caught the eye of Argentine leader Juan Peron. He ordered the car, but went into exile before it could be delivered. Instead, it was modified with a new (and more attractive) grille, hood scoop, side ports, and windshield and shown at the Paris show as you see it here. It was subsequently sold to an American military officer, who eventually painted it red as a safety measure--he felt the car was too small and difficult to see in blue.

The original car didn't have this leather interior.
