1996 Chevy Lumina ls 3100v6 - Lots of recent problems.
I have a 96 chevy lumina car, 3100 sfi v6. I was driving it back from deer camp two weekends ago when smoke started rolling out of the exhaust and the front hood. Smoke was more blue in color at first. I pull over and shut car off, turn back on and i have white smoke coming out of the hood. Eventually i manage to drive the car back home and use it for about a week. This is without any problems other than a severe loss of compression. It seemed as if going up hills was nearly impossible. As days go on, i start up the car one morning and notice it leaking anti-freeze all over the motor. As of today, trying to fix this, i start up the car and see white smoke coming out of what looks to be near the lower intake manifold gasket.
The car has also had problems with losing anti-freeze quickly and not knowing where it is going. I also hear a loud fast paced ticking noise. The throttle sensor also seems to be going bad, when i give gas the motor will continue to rev. There is 225k miles and has had a lower intake manifold gasket replaced before. However this car ran absolutely perfect before the trip. - Please help, thank you. Andy |

Re: 1996 Chevy Lumina ls 3100v6 - Lots of recent problems.
I'm not sure what you want help with...you seem to have already pinpointed the problems...I'm not coming over and working on it if that's what you're asking..
I don't know if it's worth all the effort on a motor with that many miles, especially if it's making mechanical noise now...that coolant is bound to have gotten into the oil and broken it down, shouldn't have continued to drive it after the first episode... The timing cover gaskets can fail on them with higher miles, causing hard to spot leakage and coolant/oil mixing too...I'm sure that motor needs a chainset by now, I'd do that too if you figure out the other problems...
