81 Caddy with Oil in Coolant, NO Coolant in Oil!
So I got the Oil light, fan came on loud. Spraying OIL out of the coolant resevoir BUT NO coolant is in the motor OIL. Also the temp gauge never went up, and I had been leaking oil into the coolant resevoir for some time, but not violently spraying it out... until the light came on.
So as I said, I pulled over, killed the engine and got it towed to the mechanic. First thing they said was blown head gasket... but after some investigation I found an account of someone with the same symptoms that turned out to be an OIL PUMP failure... because there was no coolant in the oil I thought it might be that. Shop is closed til monday with no further update. Could this be a OIL pump failure? I had been driving the truck for over 100 miles with oil in the coolant resevoir, before I realized the severity of the situation. No sign of overheating and no oil light came on until I got home... Anyone got any ideas? 1981 VW Caddy pickup (diesel) with 177k |

Good Luck.....In my 1982 Caddy, I had to replace the head gasket several times before I had the engine rebuilt. With mine, the diesel engine started missing which got my attention.

Re: 81 Caddy with Oil in Coolant, NO Coolant in Oil!
Forgot to mention this.......The first time the head gasket was blown, VW paid to replace it since I had bought it new. Naturally, the truck would be out of warranty when the second one went. I would have to check my receipts to tell you exactly how many times the gasket was replaced & what it cost me in 1998 to have the engine rebuilt. Mine is a diesel if that would make a difference. Approximately, 325,000 miles on the vehicle but approximately 60,000 miles on the rebuilt engine in 1998.
