2001 serpentine belt slips off
I have a 2001 zx2, that I just purchased yesterday.
I was driving home from having it registered and the serpentine belt fell off. I managed to get it back on, but when I started the car I watched it start to slide back off. There is no play in the tensioner pulley, so my guess is that's not it. And there's no problem with the tensioner itself from what I can see. What other problems could be causing this? And what else can I do to make sure the tensioner isn't the problem for sure before I waste my time looking for something else? Any help would be appreciated. |

Old belt that has stretched out. Buy another belt and compare the circumference. One will be much larger than the other. Should fix problem. If not it's your tensioner.

Re: 2001 serpentine belt slips off
When the belt is off spin the other items looking for a bad bearing. Look for a cracked mount or something out of line. Look from the side I've found a broken bracket which put the idler in a bind and you could notice the sideways pull on the belt.

Re: 2001 serpentine belt slips off
I have had the same problem on my daughter's 2000 zx2. We're on the 3rd belt! Our mechanic has done the last 22 for free including installation ( It pays to have a good relationship with a good shop) He has, however, nicely requested that we find someone who has a solution for this problem. Swears he has checked bearings and belt alignment..... I could use help

Re: 2001 serpentine belt slips off
I'm sure it lies in this area. I've found where a stud was used for a water pump and it broke and a bolt was used so the pulley was at an angle. I went to a scrap yard and looked at another car. The stud had a nut which was needed for proper alignment. I pulled the stud and purchased along with other items I needed. The mount just needed a nut under it to sit properly. Also cracked mounts are all sometimes found.
As the engine is running watch what is happening look from the side with a flashlight. A crack in a pulley will also cause problems. |
