'85 Pathfinder Intermittent fuel cut-out

We have an '85 Pathfinder which we use around our property for odd tasks, pushing dead cars, etc. It suffers from intermittent fuel-delivery cut-out. At times, it will drive perfectly fine. At other times (regardless of weather and temperature), it will rev up fine until 2000 rpm and then fall on its face. We have swapped crank, cam, and TPS sensors, and the entire PCM from a fully functional Pathfinder and it still had the same problem. Diagnostics are not easy to do on this vehicle as it is pre-OBD2. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you tried a new fuel filter?

1. Pathfinders were released in 86.5. There's no such thing as an 85 Pathfinder.

2. ECU error codes are very easy to check yourself. Read this link:

Re: '85 Pathfinder Intermittent fuel cut-out

No, it's not a joke, though I suppose it would be a good one. It's actually an '86, sorry for the typo. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote it . But, it is a real problem, the fuel filter has been checked. Remember, it is intermittent. At times, it works fine for miles. The problem always starts during a new drive cycle (in other words, it doesn't start cutting out after you have been driving for a while. If you start it and it works fine, it keeps working fine for as long as you are driving it. Next time you start it, though, it might begin to cut-out.) It's very odd.

Re: '85 Pathfinder Intermittent fuel cut-out

Sometimes you just have to start taking things apart to clean them out and check for proper operation. The EGR systems on TBI-equipped V6's really clog up with carbon and soot, for instance. The only solution to fix that is to remove the TBI and the EGR valve and clean out the passages. Mine was plugged solid when I got into it.

Talking Re: '85 Pathfinder Intermittent fuel cut-out

I believe you have a pathfinder (First major SUV in USA) manufactured in latter half of 1986 but commonly referred to as a 1987.

I agree with the previous replys, but you might also look at the fuel pump pressure and circuits on a schematic. These pathfinders have hidden fuel cut solenoids and inhibitor relays everywhere! I go to eautorepair.com to get my schematics from Mitchell for about $10.00 when I have to.

I wish I could help you further, but the schematic (typical) from Haynes is useless concerning this issue. (That's what they call it "typical schematic")
I does however show a fuel cut solenoid related to the auto choke heater.
Nissan doesn't deliver fuel at certain times to the motor.

I have a 1996 Pathfinder and have same problem - have had fuel pump replaced, relays replaced. Have to hit relay box to get started. Is getting dangerous, but after 4 days at dealership, they cannot locate the problem! Have you by chance received any information? THANKS TO ANYONE FOR HELP.
