Question Can hardly read digital clock display..??

The other morning I cranked up my 2004 Pontiac Grand Am and noticed that the clock/radio display was dim. I tried adjusting the dimmer switch for the inside lamps and it didn't help. The other lights inside went dim and bright but not the radio/clock display. I can just barely read the display and it's fading. The radio works fine and I haven't noticed any other problems. What can I do to correct this? Oh yeah, I can't locate a fuse for this specific problem to check..

Re: Can hardly read digital clock display..??

Sound like it might be the thing inside the radio itself the indicates the time. Based on prior experience, if it was the fuse to the radio, it wouldn't play at all. I have an '03 and if the fuses are set up the same way, it is located on the passenger side end of the instrument panel when you open the door. It is the blue one at the bottom (15 amp). You may want to check it just to be sure.

The lamp that illuminates the display has burned out. The lamp needs to be replaced.

Welcome to AF ladyphenom7 !!

Yeah these bulbs do burn out, I think I have a R&R for this, or at least the bulb # if that's what's out. I'll check.....

These radios are also known for thier displays to just crap out. Especialy when it gets hot out, or with the heater on high, Cold weather they seem to function right.

Edit>>

Ok the bulb is GM/AC Delco part #16208443, cost between $8-10- ouch!
Here is a pic of the bulb too.

Re: Can hardly read digital clock display..??

A couple things on replacing it. If your security feature is enabled on the stereo, red light flashes when car is off, you'll need to disable that before removing your radio.

Its pretty easy other then that. Just need to pry/pop off the whole radio bezel that is over you radio/HVAC. Carefully unplug the ETC and Hazzard switch before pulling the bezel off to far. And maybe the lighter plug? I forget.. lol
I think thiers 3-4 7-8mm screws hold the radio in, unplug the harness's/antenii and the bulb is right under the clock display. It just unscrews.

Hope that helps!

Re: Can hardly read digital clock display..??

replacing that bulb is better than buying an aftermarket radio due to the price. When i installed my radio, i had to pay $80 for the wiring harness because of the way they made these newer cars, then i also had to pay $80 for the cd player i wanted. Very costly.

Re: Can hardly read digital clock display..??

You know you could have bought the harness's you need at walmart for $30-40, then buy the aftermarket at any radio whole saler and then had it installed for $40-50. Only thing different is if you have the steering wheel radio controls. And Im pretty sure you can buy that cheaply.

But yeah the bulb is cheaper then all that.
These delcos run around $150-200 remanf., not exactly sure on a "new" one.

Anymore stereo prices for just a CD/radio is pretty cheap. Its those with the DVD and multi format inputs up front for Mp3 players.
