As far as I'm aware the metro auto does not have OD. That's one of the reasons why the auto gets much worse gas mileage than the manual.

Talking Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Year Geo Made - 1996 HB 1.0L 130K miles on engine
Miles per Gallon - 50 to 63
Type of driving - City and long distance Hwy
Comments - I am experimenting with a hydrogen booster I bought recently. Before the booster I averaged 47 mpg city and reached 53 mpg once on the highway. After dialing in the booster settings I got 62.88 mpg with mostly highway driving. I am trying a 350 mile route sometime in the next week with lots of mountain driving so the mileage should prove interesting.

Since I put in the booster I have become a mileage nut and I use all the tricks I can - turn engine off at long signals, draft behind large trucks, put in neutral and coast whenever I can, 45 PSI in tires, etc. I have only had one good mileage check since the booster was installed - in a few days I will make a long run and see if I can reach the magic 70 to 80 MPG range!

I love my Geo!

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

You mean before or after the recent problems?

Well, let me preface with saying that I basically don't do city driving with it very much. Maybe 90% highway, 10% city on any given tank. That said:

Before - 42 mpg typically, probably 36-38 with the aftermarket A/C the previous owner installed (I need an underdrive pulley SO badly)

After - 30-32 with A/C until yesterday, the first day where the vac leak had been fixed.

Give me another week or so and I'll be editing this again I hope.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

1994 Geo Metro 4 Door Hatchback
With A/C
5 Speed
40 MPG - City
When I first got the car, it had 15" wheels on it, and that was throwing the odometer off, my readings from then were 33-36 MPG. I have now switched to the 12" wheels, and am now showing 40 MPG. Also, in the meantime, I had ran one tank full with fuel injector cleaner, and had the plug wires changed (the other tuneup stuff had recently been done).
Also, the front wheel bearings were bad and were just changed, so I'm wondering if that will help my gas mileage. I read a post on the Suzuki Swift forum, that someone had changed the bearings and their gas mileage jumped up. The bad bearings were creating resistance..... So, I will post back in a few weeks to see if my MPG go up.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Freesiagirl (what does your "handle" mean?) - I have ALWAYS gotten one or two extra mpg
by changing my spark plugs to the PLATINUM ones (I prefer Bosch).

Don't pay over $4 or $5 each for them! No need - just the regular old Bosch Platinum spark plugs.
Only three plugs isn't bad....it's the V-8's where it costs a butt-load.

Be a rocket scientist - drive w/o them for three tanks, get your mpg's and THEN change
to PLATINUM's and do three more tanks of gas. Calculate your mpgs.

Then report back here and post your scientific results to us!

Any difference noted?

That is the best way to find out.

I used to be a florist. Flowergirl is too common. Freesia is my favorite flower. Therefore, Freesia Girl..... I was thinking of changing to Metro Mom though.

Thanks for the tips. I may try those platinum plugs!

After advancing the timing to 10 degrees, I averaged 46 mpg on a trip from Las Vegas to Huntington Beach, Ca.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I am guessing probablly about 50-55 mpg Cdn in the city. My other car gets 37 city 45 hwy and this Firefly is WAAY better in the city than my other car is even on the Hwy. This thing is REALLY,REALLY good on fuel! It is weird..'cause gas is $1 litre or so here..$4.50 or so Cdn. gallon..SOoo often we put in $5/10 bucks. Literally about 1 or 2 of those gallon gas cans. I fill one up for my lawnmower..and one for my chainsaw and put $10 in the car..$20 gone. I get quite a bit of driving/use! for my $5/10 in the car. My 20" chain saw has a 55cc motor and it goes through $5..worth of gas like it is a joke. I actually checked the gas cap a few times figuring it was loose.I just bought a bigger lawnmower and the first thing I noticed was WHY is the gas tank so big?? I now know why. Appalling(SHAMEFUL!) fuel efficiency on my chainsaw(new) and lawnmower(new) compared to this 16 year old Firefly.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Since January, I have averaged 43.9 mpg.
Max. was 46.8.
Min. was 38.7.
'92 XFi
Half city driving, half highway (10 minute commute @ 50 - 70 mph).
I go easy on the throttle except sometimes to & from work on the highway.
I always shift early, using the upshift light.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

After a tune up and better driving habits I now average 54 mpg in my 1994 XFi in combined city/highway driving.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I think tune-ups & efficient driving habits are the key.
Bosch platinum plugs may help (?). But I was told that the (expensive) Bosch +4s were going to give me a huge mpg boost - the result: zero change in mpg.
An accurate odometer and large sample size are also very important in assessing mpg. You need to check odometer accuracy with a very steady foot at constant road speed (preferably 60 mph), using the mile markers, over several miles, and adjust your mpg math to the error of your odometer. By large samlpe size I mean many tankfuls; a "full tank" will never be the same quantity of fuel.
I have no idea how the "hydrogen boost" works, or what it costs. Are you buying H2 gas somewhere? Or is this mysterious thing claiming to make H2? If the latter, what other by-products (like free carbon) are gunking up your engine in the process? What did this snake oil (parts & labor) cost you? Anyway, you need to factor all of the above into your mpg/cost calculations.
BTW, 45 psi in your Geo tires is for sure going to result in uneven tire wear (unless you're overloading the chassis to a GVW of like 2 tons). This in turn will result in unsafe grip levels, in the wet, at speed, etc.
Get the big picture! mpg is not all there is to economy!
