Question 2.7 4cyl or 3.4 6cyl crew cab taco

I whant to get a tacoma crew cab but i'm undecided wether to go for the 2.7 or the 3.4.....althought the 6 cyl offers more power the 4 cyl gives better gas mileage, what do you guys think will be the best buy in the long run? my taco will be use mainly as a daily driver.

Re: 2.7 4cyl or 3.4 6cyl crew cab taco

will you be using it to tow stuff? i have a 99 tacoma x-cab, its a 2.7, its a excellent daily driver, cheap on gas, but on hills it falls flat on its face depending on if its a steep hill, i usually have to hit
4th gear to go up the hill on the 4 lanes were i live, they are pretty steep. also i have a wave runner, it was hard to pull on hills i was 3rd gear doing 35 or 40 mph trying to pull them. but on flat road it puled it 65 mph easily. if i had it to do over, i would have went for the trd 3.4. its according to were you live
and if there are hills to go over you want to be able to tow things easier, plus your 3.4 truck would
probaly outlast the 2.7. the 3.4 would be tuffer. and i would get a 5 speed.

Re: 2.7 4cyl or 3.4 6cyl crew cab taco

I don't know about a 6 outlasting a 4, Toyota makes the best 4 in the business. ( power wise try comparing it with the ford ranger 3L 6 not much difference) and up till 95 Toyota has been putting the 2.4 liter 22re 4cyl in there 4x4's and there still kicking around pretty good, another thing to consider is the 6 uses timing belt's which have to be changed somewhere between 80 to 90 no real big deal but the 4 uses a chain and unless you do something stupid You don't replace them. ( I don't care what a Toyota mechanic might say) as far as shifting down to 4th on hills I don't know if You remember the old 4 speed transmission but when they came out with a 5 the fifth gear was an overdrive only! not to be used on steep inclines or for stop and go towing such as in city traffic as this is hard on the engine, the same goes with automatics that little overdrive button is supposed to be switched off when making steep climes. If big towing is what your after however Yes get a 6 if You don't want to use the slow lane through big hills or mountains.
